i’m at a point where i kind of want to just restart my entire island. i really hate the terraforming i’ve done and i feel like i don’t have enough space, but i have WAY too much space at the same time! i’m just hating my layout the more i try to work with it... normally i would restart in a heartbeat, but i have most of my dreamies at this point and would really hate to leave them behind. 😭 i don’t know what to do! help! if anyone has any ideas about what i could do, or would be willing to come to my island and give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think you need to worry particularly hard with your dreamies. Popular ones like Merengue and Whitney come up pretty often on the New Neighbour Network and you can always hang out on the Looking For thread or a cycling town for the others! You could reset for Agnes and Mac if they're your dreamies since you always start with an uchi and a jock. I don't think you need to worry about your villagers :)

Otherwise, I think you could try to terraform a little more to see if you can fix up what you don't like about it before completely restarting.

i recommend getting rid of all your terraforming so you have mostly a flat/clean island, and try to work from there. i know that the process of removing cliffs/waters one by one is time consuming and annoying, but at least it beats the grind after resetting and starting from scratch

you could also remove the bridges/inclines and move all of the villagers onto the beach to clear space for you. i did this and i'm satisfied with the bottom half of my island. my top half is mostly bare but i'm slowly finding out how i want it to look like

If you're not sure about what to terraform your island to, you can check for some inspiration from other people's pictures! If not, like others mentioned, popular villagers come by very often, so you don't have to worry about them if you're willing to trade. Otherwise you can try to find someone to hold on to your dreamies?

If the problem is with the terraforming, I don’t recommend resetting because what’s saying you won’t encounter that same problem again once you start terraforming your new island? It just doesn’t make much sense to restart over wrong terraforming since you can redo it over and over to how you want it instead. Sure, it may cost a lot of bells but that’s better than starting everything from scratch. Villagers are easier to get back but it’s the filling up the museum and getting the DIYs again that’s just gonna be so exhausting. Unless you hate major parts of your island that are unchangeable, I’d always suggest just re-terraforming rather than a complete reset.

Looking at your island, you really shouldn't restart. You don't have much as much elevated land to destroy (if needed be) and your river isn't as complex, so it can be easily done.

If you don't TT, this will take a while, but I suggest moving all your villager houses and buildings at the bottom. Demolish your bridges and inclines (if necessary). Then start from there.

If it helps, you can use this online 3D island planner to plan out your terraforming.

Ahh! I had the same urge a couple weeks ago, OP. I was ready to restart and destroy my entire island, but the one thing stopping me was that I had almost an entire set of permanent villagers/dreamies (and spent quite a while getting them!). I contemplated it for a while, but what I ended up doing was deciding the areas I liked, and I remodeled everything else little by little! And now I’m really starting to like my island!
Don’t be afraid to just start throwing stuff down! Terraforming can be a bit intimidating, but this game is super forgiving! My mindset is— if I have an idea, I’ll place it down and leave it for a week or so, and if I hate it, I have the ability to change it or even flat out destroy it. I believe once you have parts of your island that you really like, you’ll definitely start appreciating it a lot more!
Good luck! :)

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I've decided to move everyone to the bottom beach, completely flatten everything, and just start from scratch until I make something I can work with. I've come WAY too far to just throw away my museum and DIYs! It'll be a lot of hard work, but that's just more gameplay time for me :)

You've got a really great map: nice RS placement, good river exits. Maybe look in the map thread to see what other people with similar maps have done for inspiration? If one really intrigues you you could try DMing that person to see if they'll let you visit. All things considered, you've got a solid map to work with, even if you don't love what you did with terraforming.
