It shouldn't be near a door. The opening/closing of a door is like...a MAJOR draft for a bird. That draft can actually kill the bird if it's there long enough...

My friend had two parakeets for a while, I remember one time he had let one of them out out of their cage and it pooped on my shoulder. XD

sometimes me and my boyfriend will go watch the local ducks at this pond in the middle of the city, and we joke about how the ducks are one day going to overthrow the government... and take over the world...

but on topic, i love animals so much. i've never personally had a bird, but i've always wanted to have one. i have a friend who has one on this other game i play, FFXI - sometimes we'll be doing something in-game and his character will start running into a wall, and he won't respond for a few minutes... sometimes his little love bird will latch onto his computer mouse and fly away with it, lol. he showed me a picture of the bird once - asleep on his shoulder and my friend with this expression like "....kill me...." he hates this bird so much, and it loves him just as much. it's so cute, lol.
