I Hate Dogs

Black labs NEED walks and outside time to run and get out allll their excess energy. Labs are working dogs so they are breed to have a plethora of energy. You need to take them on long walks or even runs. My white lab and I used to run 6 miles a day together and she was the best behaved dog in the world, all because we got all her energy out. Or this destruction will only get worse and continue.

Your dog is BORED. Labs are wonderful, friendly dogs if they are properly trained and have enough exercise. Otherwise they DO bite, they DO chew and they CAN attack other pets or even LITTLE KIDS out of boredom.

Is he socialised? I would suggest taking him to a dog park to run around and play with other dogs if he is. If he isn't, get him to a dog trainer asap and get him trained.

If you dog has seizures (a risk of this breed due to inbreeding unfortunately) he needs to be put on seizure medications or he could have a big one and die.

It sucks, but these are the responsibilities as a pet owner.

yea, my mom got him as a Christmas present for my dad because he's ALWAYS wanted a black lab named Barkley. Then the next year my dad moved out into an apartment that costs extra money to have a pet and so Barkley stayed here at my mom's. I would say my mom does most of the pet care and I never liked the idea of having a dog as I have been a cat person my whole life. I don't like my dog but I give him attention and I pet him so I don't completely ignore him. The city I live in is very spread out and I can't think of any dog parks and if there was one, it'd be hard to get to.

When you have a dog, you kind of get used to not leaving things out.
Also, if you catch your dog, yell at them. Then they'll remember that when the chew on things, they get yelled at.

never yell at your dog. Never ever. That will scare them and they will still be bad. They can even lash out.

Clicker training is better.

Positive reinforcement, training, and walks.

we tell him he's a bad dog every time. yea I guess I shouldn't leave my things out but since he's never done that before I didn't really think about it! D:

That is not the kind of attention this dogs needs. If you pet him, he'll think what he is doing is okay and continue. You need to get him trained, teach him "leave it" so that he'll stop.

He needs walks. You play sports, right? You should get him on a short leash, hold him close and firm and take him for a jog or run around your neighbourhood. It would be a win win for you both.

Bless your heart, I agree with all your posts so far in this thread <3

Yelling won't make it any better, a simple "No" everytime you catch them doing something bad will be enough. We were able to teach my dog using that tactic, we'd say "No" and put him in a "time out" area.

Worked for me. Our dogs never chew on things, and they're as sweet and lovable as ever.

Get a kennel for him as well, so he has a "safe" area when you are away and asleep. Put a bed in it and maybe a blanket and that's it. He'll whine for a while but you have to ignore it. Once he's used to it he'll be fine.

Kennel training is also an important thing.

Your dog is clearly stressed, getting him a kennel that is all his own will alleviate some of his stress and give him a place to go.

Would he need to go on a walk every day?

Yelling is seen as aggressive. They don't understand human words but they understand human actions. They are probably scared that you will "bark" at the loudly again. You don't want your dog to fear you.

I used to train dogs. I did it for 3 summers when I was in Uni.

Yelling at a dog can backfire and will have them fearing you. A firm "no" and a redirection is all it takes, and when they are sitting near an item and not chewing, a treat or a clicker click if they are clicker trained is enough to inforce that they should leave items alone.

Dogs are like toddlers, they take so much work and effort.

And yelling just causes trauma.

For a Lab? Yes. Every day. At least a mile.

we do have a kennel for him. He sleeps in my mom's room at night on a giant pillow. We used to keep him in the kennel when we left the house, but we started leaving him out because I guess my mom thought he was more "trustworthy" APPARENTLY NOT

a firm "No" is better than loud. It'll still come across as aggressive.

A kennel is not a punishment and should never be treated as one.

Dogs are cave dwellers naturally so a kennel is a secure place where they can feel safe. Put it in a place where he can find it with the door open. He should also sleep in the kennel if he is kennel trained.

u gotta train them not to, its in their nature to chew **** that seems good 2 chew, which is why, u have to train them to not??? or give him toys that he'll prefer to chew over random ****

wait.
so you hate your dog, hes untrained, and you dont even want him?

why not put him up for adoption where he'll have a better home? (unless your mom wants to keep him, i guess.)

I'm only 16. I still live with my family. I have three sisters. It wasn't my choice to get him and it's not my choice whether to get rid of him or not. :(

Callaway, you've been such a big help :) Thank you! Sorry for using a lot of your time!

of course. If you need any advice in the future please feel free to drop me an ask. I'm a huge dog lover and am willing to help whenever I can.

I don't have a dog, but I never leave stuff lying randomly around the house. Especially expensive stuff, since someone in my family will probably sit on it. It's a shame that it got ruined, but at least hopefully you've learned to be more careful where you leave things now. :)

Probably because no one in my family knows all that much about dogs. My mom doesn't have time to take him on walks and such, seeing as she's a single parent and all. My sisters are all lazy too. One of my sisters really likes him though, I don't know why she doesn't do anything
