I get infinite play coins for no reason

It started this morning. I'm sick so I can stay at home.
I booted up my 3DS - 0 play coins.
Checked TBT (it's more convenient for me to access it through my New 3DS) - 2 play coins.
Checked TBT once more - 4 play coins
...and so on.
I'm at 9 play coins now and I didn't close it nor did I walk around with it.

Does anybody know what's up?
