I found a theory that says your mayor is actually dead, and your town is the afterlife. This is why you can't visit your parents, and why you only hear from your mother. Every letter she sends you is her placing a letter on your grave. Your father never writes because he is too upset...

Honestly, since reading this theory I've never been able to look at my mom in this game the same way. Everytime she sends me a letter I think of this theory ._.

...Even though I don't believe it, it still makes me sad. (And maybe when your dad sends a letter on Father's Day, he finally get the courage to go...but can't bear to go any other day. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. I got a letter from "mom" that said "I was walking down the street one night, the cold wind went straight through my jacket. It must've been my imagination, but I thought I heard your voice. It spooked me a little." And then the theory started to make sense lol

I don't really think that was the intent of the creators though. It's just a cute game about living in an animal town.
