I am quitting animal crossing?

my mom doesn't like fortune telling either because it goes against her religion. animal crossing's a pretty sweet game and i would hate to see someone who has a ton of progress to just drop it. you don't have to go and get katrina's shop since as vampnessa said, it's not a big part of the game.

though, if you really are going to quit, i guess i can't stop you. it's your choice after all.

Dude don't you have buildings that's more against to your religion in the city you are living in? Like adult shops, stripclubs or clubs in general. They exist and they don't disrespect your religion by merely existing, right? It is just other people's stuff, no need to associate. So do what you do irl, don't go anywhere that feels wrong to you. Ignore and avoid Katrina's place, giggle at your bad luck falling and farts. Simple as that. Not even going to repeat other sensical things that has been already said. The thread gave me a good laugh though so thx for that

Just going to put my two cents in.

I'm Catholic, always have been and I haven't been to a single church session since my confirmation. I enjoy a plethora of games depicting many different types of religious symbolism, suggestive themes and more. Some even making fun of what my religion is; but you know what? I don't care at all. I don't let a religion I was born into dictate what I can or cannot do with my life. I do what makes me happy and honestly that's all I really need in life, is happiness.

My mother is also Catholtic and she goes to many different fortune tellers, heck she even has her own tarot cards. Those things can often be seen as black magic in the branch of Christianity I'm apart of, but we don't care at all. It's the same with how some people that are Islam eat pork. I know many different Islamic people that eat pork, even when it goes against their religious beliefs but they have those things because they like them. They don't let a religion control their entire life from what they want to do.

I'm just saying, you shouldn't let a religion you're apart of dictate your entire life. It's your life that you're living y'know? It's about what makes you happy in the end of the day. There's many different symbolic themes in the game of Animal Crossing, all for people to interpret as their own although, it's supposed to be innocent. You're in control of your own town to your hearts content and if you don't want Katrina, that's fine! I'm just saying that you shouldn't let your religion decide who's bad or not by what they do in game or how they look like.

interesting topic to say the least. I personally don't see the problem? There are many things in games, literature, art and music that opposes many religions but they all have the beauty of being avoidable if they truly irk you and then there's the fact that people are accepting of ideological differences in arts (because that's what they a are: arts) this game in particular has a feature which is not compulsory and one you don't need to even see; the tent is avoidable - it's completely optional.

Don't let one feature, which most people don't care to unlock anyway, negate the experience you have had with the game.

Hi Twiggy_Star! I looked at your link to that previous post. I was raised by a really really strict, conservative family, so when I was younger I did have anxieties about religious matters too. I do think the other posters here were trying to help you get around that, but maybe you're not looking for that kind of advice just yet. For now I'll try to answer your original question about whether these things are against your religion, because I was made to give up a lot of things I enjoyed due to religious panic, and I don't want that to happen to you.

I can't really answer your question in detail without knowing your exact religion, but I'll try to be as general as possible. Katrina tells the future and your religion is probably one that is saying that's bad. It's probably considered bad because she would be consulting with occult forces right? But let's look at what she actually does in the game: she's not actually telling you things that will happen in the future or doing anything that would require supernatural help. She only tells you if you're lucky or not, or what will make you lucky. Is luck here the product of supernatural forces? No it's not. It's random numbers generated by a mathematical algorithm inside the game. Nothing here is supernatural.

Your concern might be that she is using symbols that are again, associated with the occult. As an art history major let me tell you this - symbols are what you make of them. The symbols of nazism weren't considered "evil" before they were appropriated by nazis. Jesus as the good shepherd was a symbol taken from greek culture and art. Even the wine in catholicism is sometimes traced back to dionysos, a pagan god. Symbols get transferred from different cultures and traditions really really easily. And they only become "evil" when you use them to do evil things. You're not doing anything evil at all in this game - just raising some friendly animals.

If there's anything else in the game you're worried about, feel free to reply to this post or message me! I just want to assure you that overall the game is not anything bad at all, and you shouldn't be worried about playing it.

God gave free will. We use it to do whatever we want whether it's for fun or for needs.

If Katrina isn't going to make you do evil such as murder or theft I see no reason why you would want to avoid her.

If you feel it's still bothering you too much then it's best not to get the fortune shop then. I've had towns without the Fortune Shop and I've been just fine. Nothing will be absent besides getting fortunes daily without waiting a week for Katrina to arrive.

You really don't need to quit a game over something as small as Katrina. She appears every once and a while so why not on those days you just completely ignore her? I mean it's not that hard. I don't know how your town is built but for me I have to go out of my way to reach my town square and see katrina, so I really can just miss her on days, and though I'm not nessarily religious, a lot of aspects of animal crossing could be seen as going against a religion. It's like the thing that happened with pokemon when parents thought it was satanc for some reason, you have to just get pass the fact that there is a fortune teller. She's gnna be there, and you're gonna have to get over her.

Hey guys a lot of the posts here are about how Twiggy_Star shouldn't mind Katrina, mine included, but I just looked at Twiggy_Star's original thread more closely. it wasn't Katrina's shop that made Twiggy_Star want to quit. I think Twiggy_Star was just not going to get Katrina in the first place and was only asking if it would affect the plaza tree size. It only blew up when people asked why Katrina was such a no-no, and religion got involved. In the later parts of the thread people sent in a lot of things that are in the game that could be considered offensive to religion. Long lists of things. I get that they were trying to make a point but maybe Twiggy_Star just got overwhelmed, and all of that is why Twiggy_Star now just wants to quit. I think there's just been a lot of miscommunication involved in both these threads

Okay, at the risk of being "that guy", I'm just gonna come out and say: Why ffs would you bring religion into a children's videogame?

Like, obviously, there are a lot of things about the AC franchise that go against Christianity (the whole dumb animals thing unless you're a Narnia enthusiast, for one). The very concept of playing video games encourages sloth which I believe is one of The Seven Deadly Sins. But setting all that aside, you're gonna throw away something you love to do because a cartoon cat asked to tell your fortune?

Just no.

May I say something? I still play Animal Crossing even though there are quite a few things against my religion in the game. I don't let them bother me because, you know, it's just a game. Games are meant to have fun regardless of what's in them. So just have fun with your game and don't let one tiny thing get to you, OK? :)

Serious post this time:

All I'm gonna say is there's going to be a lot of things in life that you may enjoy that arent going to cater to your religion. Anything that's in a video game especially a game like animal crossing shouldn't be frowned upon in your religion. I seriously don't think God is judging you for using a fortune telling service through a 3DS game. Your actions and behavior in real life are the only things God cares about. And if your lord does get upset over something as little as fortune telling in a video game, than why would you want to worship someone so close minded? I wont get into my own beliefs but a God/religion I believe doesn't care about what you do in video games.

And those other things that other guy posted in the other thread...most of them are stupid. I dont think Nintendo would have let resetti have a naughty magazine.

As for Tiffany, its 2019. Stop slut shaming based on her clothes and appearance.

Uh... wow. I don?t even have words. I?m sorry but you?re incredibly narrow-minded. Imagine the way you think about these things but the other way around: imagine if people would do anything in their power to avoid you and everything that has to do with your religion. Bet that wouldn?t feel good at all and would be very discriminating. However you are free to do as you wish. From what I?ve read though I?m suspecting you?re very young and hopefully you?ll think on things from a different perspective as you mature.

I'm going to close this discussion here before anyone says anything potentially upsetting.

Rather than quitting the game straight-up, I'd suggest you talk to a parent about it first. Explain what it is about the game that concerns you and ask their opinion. I'm sure they'll be able to put your mind at ease and tell you if you're doing the right thing or if they think you're over-reacting.
