Would they announce it at E3? Put it at the end of a commercial, Mother 3 style? Post a banner on the eShop?

i don't think a new one is coming for a while, in fact i think they're all out of ideas

Do you mean a direct sequel from the SNES one? I can't imagine they'd do it. Besides Paper Mario is the spiritual successor to that game anyway. But hypothetically, either at E3 or feature it in a Nintendo Direct. Mario (& Luigi) RPG games or Paper Mario games are highly desireable so they'd give it some oomph, not just some cheesy banner.

If they ever did, it'd probably be in a Direct. That game will probably never get a sequel, though.

They probably won't because they'd have to bring in Square to develop it. And they can't afford Square right now. lol

Some people consider Paper Mario ("Mario Story" in Japan) its sequel since they're both RPGs, but Gallows is correct, they'd need to partner with Square again to develop an actual sequel. And something tells me it's far too late for them to do something like that.

If they were looking to market a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG, which, as mentioned previously, wouldn't happen because Paper Mario exists, and so does the Mario & Luigi franchise, and Nintendo wouldn't want to steal the thunder from those franchises, because they sell very well, which I'll get into, also, getting Square back in to develop just wouldn't happen. Nintendo is too protective of it's properties now, although, you could argue that's becoming less true because of Hyrule Warriors being a thing, and the fact that Smash 4 is being developed by Namco Bandai, but I digress.

But, if it did happen. I feel Nintendo would not have that hard of a time selling it. Considering the cult status that SMRPG has achieved over the years, and also considering sales figures on Paper Mario: Sticker Star (1.97 million copies as of March 31, 2013), and on Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (2 million copies as of December 31, 2013). The only stop gap where there might be issues, is convincing everyone that they will like it. The Mario & Luigi franchise has received very high reviews throughout it's run. With, "Dream Team", receiving very high scores from most all relevant sources. On the other hand, the Paper Mario franchise, which is considered the spiritual successor to SMRPG, and what I imagine is closer to what the hypothetical SMRPG sequel would be like, excluding the first and Thousand Year Door, has been receiving mixed reviews, regardless of the sales numbers.

Why would Nintendo HAVE to bring in Square? I always go back to Rare, people think anything Rare did for Nintendo is lost or can't be used but that isn't true and both Nintendo and Rare said it isn't true. Popular example being Diddy Kong Racing. Take out what's Rare's (Banjo & Conker) and leave what's Nintendo's (everything else). Did Square do more than Rare in terms of contribution where Nintendo isn't allowed to reuse things from Mario RPG? Literally the first time I'm hearing of this Square problem.
That's especially confusing since Super Mario RPG is on the Wii Shop Channel unedited so I want to know what you're all talking about :p

Still standing firm on it won't happen, but why can't they just ship off the game to another inside dev like they do with other major titles? They passed Donkey Kong on and it worked out just fine *points to Tropical Freeze* Nintendo still is there, but Rare doesn't help it's Retro Studios & Monster Games. Everyone is so close minded on the idea that Intelligent Systems or AlphaDream could pick up SMRPG. But what happened was, is that SMRPG's elements just evolved into something less standard before they were able to give us SMRPG2, which is Paper Mario, a more interesting RPG style game than just standard RPG play.
By the logic that they have to use Square, then we'd have lost a million other series who've had their torches passed on. Anything Hudson did should be lost, which includes a bunch of Mario side games.

Not gonna happen. Square won't go back with nintendo and rare is stuck in contract with microsoft to make crappy kinect games.

I'm glad I managed to find two copies of Super Mario RPG at a local pawnshop for $45(obviously, I picked up one copy). Currently, my copy of one of the best mario games ever made has a permamint home in my Snes's game slot lol
