How to use villager amiibo cards?

So I got 1 pack each for series 1-4 AC amiibo cards for Christmas but I?m not really sure how to use them.. I have a bunch of villagers but I also have Joan, Katie, Gulliver, and Wendell. What can I do with the cards? How do I use them for their purposes?

Series 1-4 villagers you may move into your town (or get a random item).
NPC cards allow you to get their picture (possibly a random item too) when scanned, one per-character.
I may be missing something else, it's been a while since I've used those types.
