Hi, I thought I'd make a small post because I've seen a lot of threads like this that seem really complicated. This is basically the foolproof cycling method.
1. Wait until a villager is in boxes, save and quit.
2. TT forward a year (either clock)
3. TT forward a year. You can do the plot reset trick because this day is the day that a new villager plot will show up.
4. TT forward 6 days. Make a new save file and make sure to NOT load up your mayor. See which plot is missing.
A. IF IT'S A DREAMIE, TT back 6 days, load up your mayor, talk to them once. They'll be like "o i haven't seen you in forever". TT one more day, they'll ping, and you can tell them to stay. YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A NEW VILLAGER IN BOXES AGAIN BEFORE CONTINUING!
B. IF IT'S NOT A DREAMIE, TT back one day and load up. They'll be in boxes. This way you can sell them/keep going, since you have to have a villager in boxes for this method to work.
I've done this a bit, not a lot, but it should work. It's just doing the foolproof cycling method, but tting forward 6 days to see what villager moved out. I hope it helps!
