How to pronounce Fi.

From The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I just read her name in Japanese for the first time and I realized it's pronounced "Fai" not "Fee". I've been hearing it wrong in my head this whole time!

I've always done "Fai" but I typed it out as "fye" lol I just laugh cause honestly I almost can't imagine them naming an important more serious like character in the game FEE over Fai that doesn't sound right to me

Never knew. The only thing I knew about Fi was the mask in AC:NL since TLoZ isn't my thing. But I did assume for it to be "Fee" and not "Fie" when I first read it. I'll keep that in mind the next time I eat a fortune cookie I guess.

Apparently I'm not the only one who's too impatient to read the OP today lol

I haven't played the game, personally, but if not for this thread, I'd probably assume it was "Fee", too, since Zelda made in Japan.. and Japanese pronounce their "I" like "ee".

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but if you actually transliterate the Japanese phonetically it would be spelled Fai. Not sure why they went with the spelling Fi instead.

Maybe it didn't look ~mystical~ enough? Idk hahaha. ("Fai" does sound better to the ear, though, so regardless of why they romanized the name like they did, I'm glad it's not actually pronounced "Fee")

I've known a lot of people that pronounced it as 'fee', which really annoyed me.

But it might be just me, because I look at Japanese names to find out pronunciations for names. It also leads to a lot of frustration when I hear people saying Pokemon names wrong.

Zelda wiki is not an official source... But there was no debate anyways because nobody is denying that it's supposed to be pronounced that way. I posted this thread just because I didn't know if other people were aware and I wanted to know if they would be surprised as I was.
