In a lot of the newer and younger members, I see a lack of knowledge about posting. Not post quality, just downright pointless and out of place posts, and this stuff, especially when it happens constantly, gets on my nerves. I'm not gonna say any names, but there are definitely some members I want to see this!

Here are some ground rules to think about before you post

1.) Is it meaningful? Are you contributing the the conversation at all with this post?
2.) Is it on topic? Look at the title of the thread. Now look at your post. Do they relate at all? If the answer is no, try again.
3.) Is it only directed towards one person? If you're wanting to talk to someone or ask a question that only applies to them, take it to PM's and VM's! It'll be easier for them to see, read, and respond to!
4.) Is it helpful? If someone is asking a question on a thread, such as,
"My computer is having issues, how can I fix it?" you shouldn't post in there just to say,
"I don't know!" That's annoying and pointless
5.) Is it good information? I know we all (for the most part) like to help others with their problems, but if you feel your advice could at all be misleading or a lie, maybe just itnore the thread.
6.) Is it original? Have you said this multtiple times? Does it need to be repeated?
7.) Is it readable? How is your grammar and spelling? Have you fixed mistakes in your post?
8.) Is it respectful? Whether it's a post on a thread, or a PM/VM, you need to be respectful of people. Not everyone wants to be spammed with PM's and VM's, especially if they've said something along the lines of 'leave me alone' or 'please stop'.

Now, in terms of making threads, here are some questions you can ask yourself before creating

1.) Will this spark good and meaningful conversation? Can a discussion come from this that won't just turn into one big fight?
2.) Will this help someone? Sometimes, as seen on the ACNL Discussion board, threads can be used to inform people of important things such as good tips, or even warnings against things. Even these boards can spark good conversation!
3.) Does is already exsist? There is no need to make duplicate threads. Really. No need! If a thread has died, bump it once. If a thread topic isn't catching on and has already died, why make a new one?
4.) What's the point of this thread? You don't need to make a thread just to share your favorite song. Threads like that already exsist! Really, we have 'general discussion' threads and things similar to that for a reason.
5.) Is it truthful? Making a thread called "Animal Crossing: Wii U!" could make a lot of people mad, especially if you try and act like it's really been announced.
6.) Does it make sense? Is it written in a way that makes sense and is readable?
7.) Can this be answered through a single post or a google search? Does this question or topic really need its own thread?

Hope this is helpful and keeps you from being hated!

Thanks for this!

Another side point could be "is it true?"

It's not a good idea to post about something if you're not 100% sure it's right or true, unless you state so in your post or if it's a speculation thread/post.

Good guide, but it's against the rules to bump old threads. I find bumping old threads annoying too. You shouldn't have to look through a million pages to find a thread, just make a new one. :3

Well, I didn't mean like 2006 threads, lol, but more like threads from pages 2 or 3 that aren't against the rules to bump, but ones that have already been discussed to death and stuff. That is true, though.

You have some really good rules! Hopefully the newer members will read this.

Another thing to keep in mind is grammar. I don't think it's a huge issue on the forums, but I for one get a bit annoyed when it seems like the poster didn't pay attention to what they were typing. I understand that younger members might not type as well as older ones, but that's no excuse for a series of misspelled words. Just reread over your posts to make sure they make sense. :)

Some good solid advice in here. :) It's okay to bump if it's at least somewhat recent. Just don't go around posting in years old threads!

Alright, thanks. I had actually been looking for some clarification on this anyways.

Amen. it's some of the older/less recent users too and I haaaate it. I wish that people would think before they say and convey opinions without being totally rude and uneccessarily mean.

Yes, and also making stupid spam threads about some Internet meme or whatnot.

I hate it when people ask simple question when they can save everyone the trouble just by using Google. "How can I get the gold shovel? When does the snow disappear? Why isn't my town perfect?" It is literally easier/faster to just look it up instead of posting it here on tbt.

Sometimes I go on lmgtfy and link it just to show them.

I keep reading this title really fast and I thought it said "how to make a thread to annoying everyone" I was like do we need a guide for that? Who wouldn't know how to do that? Lol

Some good solid advice in here. :) It's okay to bump if it's at least somewhat recent. Just don't go around posting in years old threads!

Or a decade old thread...

Glad this thread is getting positive reception, and hasn't turned into a bunch of immature arguing and finger pointing

Okay, I just saw someone link this thread to
someone else which is really rad! Thanks you guys!

I have been here almost a year, am 31 years old. I have seen an influx of new and seemingly younger members and do agree with a lot of what is said. Please do not get angry at this next part, the only thing is...how to put this, I have an Eng Lit degree and am a writer and know all about proper sentence structure, grammar, and appropriate explanation but this is not an academic conference paper, mistakes will happen. If a question is too hard to understand for a younger player due to word usage or just a high level question, I would say ignore it not ask someone to dumb it down as far as word usage. Grammar mistakes will happen though, I have learned this as, I being physically disabled, (no comment please) just background, must use a talk to text or when use my hands to type IPad buttons, I cannot possibly make sure it does exact punctuation always, or will not misspell what I said and go through and re type by hand takes forever...literally can take an hour by hand as don't have a press keyboard. So, for me, when these minor slips or run ons happen I hope for a little understanding.

That said, where younger players are concerned there is a lack of proper writing skills being taught in this country, have debated much and fought on teacher issues which is why I never went into that when I was able as a career, they are used to text talk and abbreviations and there I do agree that things do need to make sense and be readable. However in some situation some grammar and or punctuation errors will occur with non computer able keyboard or microphone to text typing for handicaps. As for the rest, I agree 100%. Just not a need to nitpick any typographical error or lack of a comma my speak devices don't do this and I can't afford new machinery ATM.

However, back to the mainline, with that being said... sometimes if it is a question many may have then by all means ask and get it over with for all but I agree I have seen questions that can be looked up easily on thonky or elsewhere if the means for browsing are there from newer players. Some are very young though I suspect, so as adults or long time players, we must remember that this game does draw a large young audience as well and I hope this helps them to; be respectful of others, not repeat easy questions and all of the above else but we too must show patience while they learn the game as brand new players will. Overall though bravo, I think it is wonderful to put this out there. It will help keep our community the respectful and helpful place that I had grown to love this past year and have been watching change. I love the part about if there is no help in it and you have nothing nice to say use the old adage of be polite and pass it by. Thanks for this posting and for reading this, whoever did.
