So I have been playing The Witcher 3 on and off for the past year, due to the release of new expansions etc. In one word the game is amazing... completely deserving of all of the Game of the Year nominations it received for 2015. The game features 200+ hours of emotionally gripping story telling. The combat mechanics are great. The werewolves, vampires, giants etc. that you fight are awesome. The world design is massive and gorgeous. Overall an amazing RPG.
However, I say all of this to post that my relationship with the Witcher 3 is a love/hate relationship. On the one hand you have one of the best RPG's ever created. On the other hand the subject matter is completely and utterly about being a Witch(er) practicing witchcraft in a fantasy world. You interact with Sorcerers and Sorceresses. Characters wear necklaces of pentagrams and upside down pantagrams. You sometimes help in performing rituals and the like. You craft potions with herbs (though granted, most RPG's have a potion crafting/magical mechanic). You sometimes fight demonic entities, possession, summon and communicate with the dead, communicate between realms with crystals... Long story short, basically the whole 9 yards of witchcraft is presented in the Witcher 3. I am conflicted as to whether this is a suitable game for a God fearing man to be playing.
I'm conflicted mainly because this is just a video game, and a great video game at that. And as a gamer I tend to justify that all games I play are just games and ultimately harmless (i.e. from Call of Duty, to Grand Theft Auto, to Mario Kart). I do play a lot of FPS games. But are those games really harmless when the whole point of FPS games are to kill when there is a stone engraved commandment against killing? Atleast in the Witcher you are able to actually help people in need, by giving them water or food, or helping villages against monster threats or political corruption and theft. The game isn't about killing people, but instead making choices to help people.
I am aware that God commanded the Israelites to not practice witchcraft. Is that what I am doing when I am playing the Witcher 3? Or should I view it as just a game, and possibly even an educational tool, to help me further be able to recognize satanic symbols and rituals in real life?
I could really use some wisdom on this issue.
