I'm seeing people with lots of public works projects done and buying/selling thing for lots of money (500,000-900,000$ but it's not that I was gonna buy things for that much anyways). Anyways, I'm wondering how they made all that money and how I too can make that sort of dosh.

I used to make money by bug catching, fishing on island at night, selling item or garden stuffs to other players, turnips, playing with Re-tail premium item . But I think the faster way is tbt to IGB trading now.

1. Go to the island at 7pm and collect the high price bugs. Removing some trees, shrubs and flowers will get you more high price bugs. I left one tree on the grass and removed the rest of the trees/shrubs/flowers. I just have 3 trees on each side of the hut. All the other palm trees got chopped down.
2. Check your retail board for premium bugs, fish and perfect fruit. You'll get double for bugs and fish.
3. Sell your perfect fruit in another players town when they have premium perfect fruit at retail. Make sure they don't have the same fruit as you do.
4. Buy turnips when you get some bells. Check all the different message boards for towns that have high turnip prices. Someone retail was 630 this week. That will make you a lot of bells.
5. Sell all the extra event items when it's premium Furniture day at retail. My Guest town just had Festivale Day and made 400K selling the furniture.

the island bug hunting thing works a fortune. what i do, instead of selling them, is wait until i get a lazy villager camping in my town. then i empty my pockets and put the bugs that i got from the island in my pockets and go back to the camp site. when u click on them, they will start saying to play some games and one of them is to buy ur items at a high price. it's a game where u have to guess the fuit and the less tries u take, the more bells u get. that's how i got a lot of my money.

You can also grow lots of perfect fruit trees of your native fruit, and sometimes they will be "premium" at Re-Tail. If you have baskets and baskets of fruit stored in your inventory, or store them in your museum, in letters, etc. You can make a lot of bells.

Perfect fruit that is non native but on premium in someone elses town makes a LOT of bells.
And turnips. There's always the turnip trade.

Not as much as bugs on the island, but there are other ways to make a lot of bells.

P.s. If you save up enough money at the beginning of every month you can make 99,000 in "interest" at the ABD. The post office will mail you a letter to tell you that you have earned it in interest.

If you end up posting a lot here on tbt, you can eventually trade the forum bells you've earned for in game bells (igb). 1 tbt is worth 200,000 igb. I did a 500 tbt for 100,000,000 igb trade that took about 3 hours once. Other than that, catch rare beetles on the island, sell any mushrooms you find in town, catch rare fish, update your dream town often, sell your perfect fruit in a town with a different native fruit (because it sells for more that way), plant money trees in town and earn monthly interest on any characters you have if you have so many bells saved up.

I would invest a lot into the stalk market, and watch this video if you're just getting into it
. If you end up getting a decreasing pattern, don't want to risk a loss with the random pattern, or just want to try and get a bigger profit post on other sub forums on bell tree asking for a place to sell turnips or look at the official turnip thread http://www.belltreeforums.com/showthread.php?69010-Official-Turnip-Prices-Thread

I make over 200k bells per evening catching beetles on the island.

Basically I've cut down all trees except for two palm trees on either side of the island, and I wait until 7pm when all grasshoppers have gone to bed (which usually fits in with my work schedule anyway), first I pick up all shells off the ground so it's easier to see if a hermit crab has materialised, and I run between the two Palm trees scaring off all the wharf reaches/tiger beetles (I think? The other bug on the ground that isn't roaches) and hermit crabs as I go, and catching the stag beetles from the palm trees. Once I've filled my boxes with beetles I go home and sell them for 200k +

I made about 10mil on bug catching and fishing on the island, but I'm very impatient and didn't have the time for that every night. So just saved tbt and then sold 100 at a time for 20mil

If you're more patient than me, some people exclusively catch Hercules and golden stag beetles which net the highest return, though it takes quite a while longer, with your boxes filled with only these beetles you're looking at around a 500k return from one trip.
