Shooting down balloons can give you those retro looking Mario items.

yeah the balloons that float around in your town, you can usually hear like a gust of wind or something then just shoot them down with a slingshot, those are the only way to get mario items I do believe...other than buying them from people of course. Oh and yes there are a few from Nook's shop you can get from the point system.
