How to get Gold Medalist badge?

Do i have to accumulate atleast 5000 medals?
Or do i have to earn 5000 medals total?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you just need to earn 5,000 medals total. I currently have the Silver Medalist badge and I've never had 1,500 medals on hand at once, so it's probably the same for the gold badge as well.
