It doesn't matter how they're arranged, as long as there is space for a bud to spawn around the pair you're breeding. I've had equal success with them in a row as I have with them in a checkerboard.Apparently you also have better chances if the flowers are diagonal to each other.
I breed mine in an X like pattern with the flowers at the 4 points of the X and at the middle
It gives flowers room to grow inbetween
I put mine in rows of Xs and all of my flowers have bred perfectly fine? I'm sure there may be better strategies but I'm just sharing mine!x pattern isn't really a good pattern to use, since the way it is set will leave watered flowers without a partner, which will just cause them to clone instead of breed and you may end up thinking you got something, when you just got an extra of the same flower. Diamond patterns or pairs of two are best, since this way it'll always have a partner.

I do use the top one in the rows hahaIf you're doing a grid like (x = flower, o = empty) this, then its fine though you will still have flowers clone themselves still, just not as many:
xoxoxoxoxoxox
oxoxoxoxoxoxo
xoxoxoxoxoxox
But if you're just doing:
xox
oxo
xox
then it's less fine because you will only generally get a single breeding pair, while the remaining 3 flowers will just clone themselves. Not very efficient.
I personally use this layout:
xxoxx
oooo
xxoxx
oooo
xxoxx
or this, but horizontally. This way I always have a breeding pair.
The diamond pattern is personally the best, but its probably a bit annoying to 'draw' out with text, lol:
oxo
xox
oxo
but you do it multiple times, but not touching other diamonds. This one also always has a breeding pair, no flowers that will clone.

Luckily my flower breeding days are almost over so I'm glad to get this flower business over with. These flowers and their genetics are too much work
