I got it today, and cut 2 trees down without a special tree stump. Does anyone know the odds? Or is it just a random, unknown chance?

Its suppose to be random and rare most of the time with a golden and normal axe, but if you cut down trees with a sliver axe then you will always get a special tree stump.

My friend gave me a silver axe, and I know that those always leave special patterns. But I want to know, is it more common than a normal axe?

Yes, the rate for a golden axe producing a special stump is higher than a normal axe, but not enough for it to be super noticeable. It’s just slightly higher

Doubt this information is accurate, but I did some 'testing' a while back and I came around it being 8% for a special stump.

I planned out a little section of my main town with a Fire Pit surrounded by a Log Bench and a bunch of stumps, because you unfortunately can't adjust the direction of benches. So to make that happen, I planted a bunch of trees around the Fire Pit and proceeded to cut them down once they reached their full size. I found the Golden Axe's chances of producing a stump pattern to be too infrequent to be depended on, as I had to keep replanting trees in the spots the normal stumps occupied, and thereafter decided to just buy some Silver Axes here on the forums. I wouldn't recommend depending on the Golden Axe, especially if Khaelis' estimate of 8% is accurate. Use the Silver Axe your friend gave you and save yourself time and hassle. Just remember that the Silver Axe isn't unbreakable in New Leaf and can only be used 136 times before needing to be replaced, so maybe keep track of your uses if you want to keep it for a while.

I don't find the golden axe leaves anymore special stumps than the regular axe.

I have alot of silver axes I use for those anyway.

I haven't got many silver axes so to make them last as long as possible I do the first two cuts with an ordinary axe and the last cut with the silver axe - it still gives me a design stump every time.
Gold axe - I've not found it any better than the normal for giving a design, but then I don't cut that many trees. Usually leave it in storage, would be just like me to sell it by mistake (tho I know Reese will say its rare do you really want to sell).

If you don’t have a silver axe, it’s much easier to farm them with a golden axe because they don’t break. You can just rinse and repeat the process until you get one. I wouldn’t bother with it though.. just purchase a silver axe if you want the special stumps. You may even find yourself farming for specific stump patterns, which of course is a lot easier with the silver stump (I believe you can just save before chopping the tree and if u don’t get the pattern you like, reset and chop it again). Remember to use the silver axe on the very last chop so it doesn’t break down as quickly.

That's what I do.
Save, then chop, and if it's not the stump I want, I turn off without saving and keep going until I get what I want.

I like getting the pine tree's clover pattern.
