How often does a villager give back something that was given to them?

On a related topic of giving stuff to villagers and trying to remove them/get rid of them from the villagers' inventories, how often or how rare does this happen.
I've been giving stacks of fruits daily to Aurora, Rudy, and Julia trying to get them to give me stuff that has been given to them from before and it seems they keep giving random stuff that doesn't seem like its been in their inventories. I also thought their inventories were also somewhat limited?

Just wondering if anyone has a better understanding on this area.

I've never had them return previous gifts after gifting them myself, but I have two characters on my island and with my second character when they have a thought bubble or when they run up to her sometimes they will give or sell clothes to her that my first character had given them. I don't know if it works if you only have one character. I hope that makes sense.

I know that giving a villager enough furniture will start to replace the ones they already have (including items you gave to them in the past) and I assume clothing works the same way, but I'm not sure if fruits will affect that since they don't actually do anything with the fruits. So I'd suggest gifting them clothes if you're trying to get rid of clothes they received in the past.

Oh I thought it was random? I've been giving clothes to Whitney on a second character, and she gave me back one of the clothes to my main character ;v; other than that she hasn't re-gifted her other gifts

I am not sure they give things back, it happened to me in nl but i feel like in nh they just throw them away, could be wrong though since others said it happened to them. Fruit wont work, the items are in their storage and to get them replaced you have to gift them clothes and furniture, as far as i can tell. You are right about their storage being limited which is why they get rid of some things eventually.

I have yet to have a villager re-gift something back to me-- I didn't even know they did that ! The only thing I knew of was that if you gave them enough furniture they'd eventually replace even the furniture you'd gifted them. Gonna have to start giving Molly hella clothes to see if she'll start throwing them back at me LOL

I just bought an explorer shirt back from Erik...it was bought by the same character that gifted the shirt.

Cookie have been giving me back items I gave her....its starting to get annoying -.-
