Like many other people, I want to get more tbt, both for the upcoming fair and to buy more NH items. I'm gonna attempt to make a small art shop. Also cause I need to practice more.

Examples below!

I'm pretty sure these are all 500x500, which fit pretty good as avatar sizes (example is my own avatar). I would prob only do digital headshots like these for villagers and simple OCs cause full body takes too long and I forgot how to draw fullbody. Also incase you couldn't tell, idk how to shade on digital. The one in the middle is pretty simple and fast to do.

I just want to make sure I'm now lowballing myself with the art and amount of effort I put in.

Edit OR should I aso do art for wishlist items and igb? I'm not interested in NMTs.

Here's an example of what art I normally do-

Very much not like my digital stuff😅

Well, one way to price stuff is how long does it take for you to draw something? Something that takes, say 20 min, will cost much less than something that takes hours. Give yourself an hourly pay and see how long it takes for you to do something then price accordingly.

You can also do pwyw and see what happens

Hope this helps! :)

For the first one, the girl with grey hair, it took me about an hour. I'm kinda new to digital (my main is traditional) and I really don't know any shortcuts other than the symmetry ruler. I use the brushes the app gives me and I haven't downloaded any fancy brushes that would make some stuff easier. The second one took me about 15 minutes cause I was already very familiar with my OC and I was messing around with a brush. Plus he's pretty simple to draw.

Other than time, how much do you appreciate and value your work? But on a more realistic note, how marketable is your art? Set a price that attracts people, not because it's cheap but because it's affordable for the value you believe it is worth. There's no point in just pricing if there's no one around. Time is an inconsistent factor (though commonly used and is reliable) for commissions as there are people who can work full pieces in a quick turnaround time while others not :>. Imo, head icons are commonly around a minimum of 5 - 10 and +, depending on the amount of color and cleanliness of the art ^^).
My turn around can be up to a week, cause I'm slow. I value commissions I do and the time it takes me to do more difficult things like hats, glasses, antlers, intricate hair, stuff I'm not so good with, ESP digital. Traditional is how I usually draw but with simple headshots it's a little quicker and easier to do them digitally.

As far as marketability goes, I've done art shops before with very little action, cause there's other people out there with much more talent or skill. Because of this I would make my stuff dirt cheap even thou in the end I felt how much I was charging didn't reflect the amount of time and effort I put into it. But, hardly anyone did order anythin from me anyway, even with dirt cheap prices, so I just gave up.

Edit

Here's an example of my traditional stuff

Realistic, detailed, shaded BUT traditional doesn't photograph well (example the picture is blurry towards the bottom), this style only really works for pets, and this isn't the cartoony anime style people typically get.

The art industry is a real difficult market to break through and I feel you on that, continue promoting your shop always and never give up. Eventually someone will buy your art. Considering what you say, I think it's just right to price your art 10-15USD for head icons as it's the standard starting price especially since you say you spend more time and effort for more accessories and more varied hairstyles. At some point when you have enough commissions you can raise your price by a dollar or two (or more) by the next month of progress :>

Ah, I should have specified, that I would charge in tbt/igb/wishlist items only cause I don't a bank account to link to a PayPal, nor do I have any cards.

But you saying my art is worth 5-10 IRL cash does make me feel better about it, when you had said 5-10 at first I thought you meant tbt and was Iike 'well damn I think it's worth more than 5tbt :/'

Bumping, esp with the fair today.

Even thou tbt gained would really go to NH stuff since I doubt there will be alot of action during a fair.

Not really a post about pricing, because I don't own an art shop here, but I've seen a lot of people who are just starting do a few freebies of what they're going to offer in their shop just to hopefully make people interested and look forward to your art shop opening!
Also, you get free examples for your shop c:

But about pricing - many people open pwyw (pay what you want) shops at first to really set a ground for their prices, so that may be a good idea too

I usually try to price based on pwyw/bribe style then decide on a price & evaluate the market ; n ;

So if you don’t mind that, maybe you can start by doing that and eventually sent your own price based on how much you value your art & demand.

From what I’ve seen, people are more inclined to offer items/igb than tbt

Bumping! Once the fair is done I might open an art shop so I can do somethin in my spare time and earn more NH items.

I added another example, the blupee from LoZ:Breath of the Wild.

Like everyone else is saying, pwyw is a good start. But if you want a set price, I THINK a standard price for art on here is 100 tbt? Someone correct me if I'm wrong 😅 (that's the price I'd likely charge!)
but yeah, everyone else is making great suggestions. Don't sell yourself short. But if you truly don't think your work is ready to fetch the kind of price you want to charge for it, I'd absolutely suggest art trades as a way to practice and make some art friends who'll help you develop as an artist- plus you'll get some cool art and some exposure out of it. Good luck!

Lol I think 100 is a stretch for my art, I'm not on that level.

I've strayed away from PWYW before cause some people just don't know what to pay and don't make a commin. I was thinking if I did PWYW then I could have a base price for those who don't know how much to pay and to avoid low ballers, (which I honestly doubt would happen but still).

Bumping!

I think since traditional pencil is my main art drawing thing, I'll include an option to draw people's pets like dogs, cats, fur babies and maybe birds. I've never drawn a bird in a pencil shade realsitic style before.

So as practice for me please drop CLEAR headshot pics of your fur or feather babies. I won't take all requests since pencil drawing takes me longer to do and I need a ref for my shop. But once I'm done I'll send you the finished version.

Here's an example of what my usual pencil drawing looks like. Except, without the gold.

would completely understand if you don’t choose her as she’s a pain to get decent photos of aha :P

Bumping! Now that events are slowing down I can focus more on my AC shop (that will be re-opening once all events and mayhem are over) and future art shop.

I still need pet pics!

Bumping again .-.

I also now need some OCs. Since I've had to colour alot with the fair I've learned things like APLHA LOCK so I want to try to make somethin somewhat more detailed than my usual stuff.
