As long as you use a physical copy, the cartridge holds the data, not the 3DS itself. If you use a digital copy, however, the data would be saved to the micro SD card.

edit: basically, the 3DS is just used to show what's on the cartridge or card, rather than saving the data to the console itself.

It doesnt use the SD card for saving? o: I totally thought that was how it worked so I was totally scared to touch my SD card in fear or crashing my games. XD

Four real town and some spare towns. Last year I received the NEW 3DS so I added a new town to it.

I'm sure it doesn't, because even the old cartridge games I have from my DS lite still have all my old data on them when I play them on my N3DS. Plus, I recently got a 2nd cartridge that was used, and a whole town was still saved to the card, and worked perfectly fine.

3 atm all of which I use as my own towns, although 2 of them are frozen in time cuz I'm done w em. Probably gonna buy a 4th at some point and even a 5th. Doubt I'll go past 5 copies though.
