I've never cared much for having one of each villager personality type, I've chosen my dreamies purely based on aesthetics. I've learned recently that different personalities give different reactions so now I may need to let some temporary residents come and go. Trying to decide if I also want to go for the reaction given to best friends only, since that will be more of a commitment. Can you share based on your own experiences how long it usually takes to reach that best friend status?
How long does it it typically take you to become best friends with a villager?

I think if you gift them something good everyday (foreign fruit or furniture wraped) it could take maybe a month

I just got Zucker's picture frame last night. 
He was the third villager on my island and been playing since release....
It can take a while, but if you keep talking to them and interacting, you'll get it eventually.

Just a word of caution - I don't know if this is true, but I think I read someone on here say that if you give them too many wall lamps, it starts to replace their regular inventory and their items can start disappearing from their house.
Someone on here had mentioned giving summer shells so I have been doing that recently. So far, I've always gotten an item back (whereas with foreign fruit, sometimes I only get bells). I don't know if the shells go into their inventory the way lamps do, though.
It is true, as I found out the hard way. Apparently it only removes wall-mounted furniture and tabletop furniture, and you can regift them the exact version of that item and they’ll put it back. I had no luck getting the wall-mounted furniture to be reinstalled. For me, better safe than sorry and no more wall lamps from me.
The vast majority I've reached it without even trying. I haven't gotten pics from most of them yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm at the right level- just bad luck. I just talk to them everyday and do favors, and sometimes give them gifts.
One person suggested giving an exotic fruit (or coconut) every day, gift-wrapped. It won't mess up their house/wardrobe (99% sure at least) if you decide to hang on to them just long enough, then try and sell/trade 'em.

I've had the iron wall lamp removing items problem too. But I blame Beau if he would just give me the picture already he wouldnt be having this issue! I had switched to foreign fruit and being extra cautious with wall lamps for my other two villagers I am currently gifting. I have posted before been playing every day since launch still no picture..... one day!

For the ability to get the special reaction, probably around 3 weeks to a month for me, and that was with Rodney who I pampered and showered with gifts more than any other villager I've had. (Meaningful gifts, mind you - furniture for his house, clothes that look good on him, etc.) For other villagers it might've taken a bit longer, say a month and a half to two months?

Fastest was Cyd who only took 3 weeks of gifting iron wall shelves and some shirts to get the picture. I was probably BFFs with him before that but RNG gave me his picture the fastest out of all my villagers. I didn't notice whether the gifts removed any of his furniture but I've been gifting the same items to Ken and his original wall hangings seem to stay intact. I only just received Jambette's picture today after having her since day 3 lol. I gave her a crown though, idk if that helped at all but I just thought she deserved it :')
Iron Wall lamps are a major black hole for resources. Just buy wall furniture from the catalog.
