How is everyone making such nice custom designs?

I've noticed a lot of really nice custom designs that look almost exactly like the real piece of clothing they're basing their design off of.

I'm doing good just to go by pixel art to make anything. I'd love to be able to name clothes from my favorite shows. Are there any tutorials anywhere i could use to get better?
