How exactly do flowers grow?

So, I've planted several large gardens with horizontal rows of flowers, hoping to get some hybrids. Is this the best way to plant them, or should I do clumps of flowers or maybe diagonals? Also, when do they grow? Sometimes, I notice new flowers growing during the day when I turn the game off, but typically it seems to only happen at night while I'm sleeping. Will more grow if I leave the game off more times through the day?

The best way to plant flowers is diagonally, it gives you 4 points of contact. New flowers can be planted by villagers, but others grow overnight too
