How does the town tree work?

Ok so, I understand that the tree works based on the hours/days that you've played. But how does the game know how long you played?
Is it based on the records kept in the 3DS (that you can actually look at) or is it data stored in the game?
The reason I'm asking is because I reset my town a week ago and I was wondering if it would quickly grow if I TTed a lot to get the days done to meet the hours that I've played the game, not just with my new town but with the hours I've played the game since I got it.
I'm not sure if anyone can really answer this, but maybe someone knows?

I've heard its in game, its not the same amount of time that is said in the Activity Log.

The game tracts how many hours you've played, that's how it grows. You can't TT to make it grow. So if you don't play for a while and wonder why your tree hasn't grown, it's because you haven't played in a while.

Edit: I didn't say anything about the Acticity Log, I just read somewhere that said TTing doesn't effect it (all the time) and most of the time it's based on how many hours you've played... (according what I read)

Yes, you can. If you move day by day it will increase the days played.

The data is stored within the game. I have over 1,000 hours in my log on the 3DS but in-game my tree is tiny.

Yep. After a month was released in NA, towns that should have only been a month old had the biggest tree possible. The only way they could've done that is TTing. Before I reset my town I TTed villagers out and mine got huge.

Really...? When you TT do you use the 3DS clock or the acnl clock? I use the 3DS clock and I TT all the time and it never grows.

I TTed at the start of the game and it grew crazy fast. I'm pretty sure it adds 1 pixel of height/day, at least that's what I've heard!

It's based on the amount of hours you play AC:NL. I don't think that the activity log has anything to do with it.
