How does the re-tail method work?

This sounds dumb but ive wondered for a long time. When you do a trade and have to trade a LARGE amount of bells, some people do the retail method. Can anyone explain this to me? Its a pain trying to withdraw and lay out millions of bells with minimal space in my town just to trade!

Put overpriced stuff in Re-Tail

You just put something (like fruits or shells) priced at 999,999 in the spots in Re-Tail. The other person buys them to make up that price and the money is in your bank account in the post office the next day.

That still doesnt seem very convenient. Maybe they'll fix the issue in the next ACNL so we can transfer funds or something a bit more user friendly!

It's a lot more convenient than leaving bags and bags of bells all over the place!
