How does the campsite method actually work?

I was TTing furiously today to finish my rock garden. One part of the process was maxing out the number of weeds so new ones don't spawn. I have nothing left to lose now so I thought I may as well try out the campsite method to get a villager I'd like! Except... I don't really know how it works? Is there a certain timeframe you should be sure to always skip to to get a camper? Is there a better way of guaranteeing you get the one you want? I'm aware I sound stupid, just looking for advice (−_−;)

this is how i did the campsite method (and felt extremely burnt out afterwords):

1. time travel day by day until you get a campsite villager.
2. time travel a week (some people say ten or fifteen days, i actually don’t remember which of these numbers that i used)
3. ... wait. and skip. and feel numb inside.
4. get your coveted villager at the cost of many, many hours of your life. worth it ;)
