how does harv's island work?

what's the point of it? i don't really understand what it's for or how it works.

you can use it to do photoshoots with any amiibos you own (of characters that are in the game) but i use it to scan random characters in so i can get posters of them

I use the island for for posters. I'm not big on photo ops.
