What? Where did you hear that? Flowers most definitely help the grass grow back. Plant flowers everywhere, every day if you can, starting with the places you want grass to grow back first.

No, running or walking won't make a difference, trust me. The best way to have a straight path to going to every building and house, is to lay patterns going there, and only walk on patterns, so the grass will grow back in the empty areas.
Like what everyone else is saying plus lots and lots of patience.
I'd recommend using a pattern road. It doesn't protect the road underneath, but it guides you better so that your only walking in one place rather than all over the place.
