How do your villagers respond to your reactions?

I'm trying to figure this out..
I have 5 crankies in my island so far, 4 wolves (Wolfgang, Lobo, Fang, Chief) and 1 deer (Bruce) and the wolves don't respond to my reactions the same as Bruce.

The wolves would usually just stare or smile when I use most reactions to them, even when I greet them. Bruce, like the rest of my villagers who are not cranky, would normally respond by copying my reactions or you know the normal reactions you'd usually expect from villagers.

I haven't seen this addressed anywhere, maybe it's locked to certain species? It's definitely not the personality type here, I really don't know, has anyone noticed this with certain species they have?

I only have one wolf (Audie), but she responds to everything normally, so maybe not a wolf thing? I only have one cranky (Buzz the eagle) and I haven’t tried many reactions on him. Are they all fairly new or have you had them for a while? Wondering if it could be tied to friendship level, but that’s just because I don’t know what else it could be.

I like using the Flourish reaction (twirl), and I noticed that Crankies don't even twirl like other personalities, unless you bring them to Photopia. They just smile.

Also last night, I tried to spam different emotions at Elvis, and he didn't even react. He just looked at me. First time it happened.

I don't really think it's a friendship thing, I've had at least Lobo for quite a while now

Being cranky alone is not the reason as I stated in my topic post, like I'm used to things being the way they are now but the change is noticeable compared to new leaf at least
