It may be Japanese in origin (actually, it's English in origin, since "Pocket Monsters" is English, but it's just pronounced in a Japanese way), but they're not giving you a romanized Japanese word and expecting you to know Japanese pronunciation, they're giving you a modified romanized word that tells you precisely how to pronounce it.
