You know the decade from 2000-2009? I’ve always read/said it as zero-zeroes but I heard it said as “aughts” once and I think that’s cool. How do you guys say/read it? If English isn’t your first language, then feel free to share how you say it in your mother tongue.

I most often just refer to that decade as the 2000s, though I might occasionally use the terms aughts.

I don't know that I've ever heard it referred to as zeroes or zero zeroes before coming across this thread. I guess I can sort of see it since people used to refer to the previous decades as the 80s, 90s, etc. as a shorthand instead of saying 1980s, 1990s, etc., but ever since the new millennium I always tack on the 20 at the front. That's how I always see and hear it used by others as well. For example, I wouldn't refer to the current decade we're in as the 20s, I call them the 2020s, because I associate "the 20s" with the 1920s.

I just say 2000’s. I personally haven’t heard of these other names nor have I heard people call them these names.

It depends on where the flow of the sentence leads me. But usually only "2000's" or "aughts" I've never heard anyone use the first two.

I would refer to it as the 2000s!

I have heard it refferred to as the 2000s, but more commonly I hear it referred to as the “noughties”, given that nought is the digit zero. I don’t think I’ve heard it referred to as the aughts or the zeroes, but I guess different places will refer to that period of time with different names!

i just say 2000’s. i’m from the u.s and i’ve never heard anyone irl say “naughties” before (im thinking maybe it’s a uk thing) but wouldn’t that make more sense for the 1990-99 decade since it sounds like 90’s?

I just call that time period the two thousands. Similar to how I call the 1970-1979 the seventies or 1990-1999 the nineties.
2010-2019 are the called the twenty tens. 2020-2029 would be called the twenties. I think most people who were alive in the 1920s aren't going to be alive during the new twenties.

I think “zero zeroes” is just a me thing, lol. I tend to pronounce abbreviations in my head differently, as it’s just the way my brain works. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard “zeroes” either, it was just an assumption I made. Apparently “noughties” is a British English thing and “aughts” is a US English thing. I’m surprised that aughts is said in the USA since we don’t really say “naught” here otherwise and it sounded kind of British to me. The more you know!

i only hear the "aughts" or "noughties" when it comes to music, like when stations on the radio are playing music from those years.
i only say 2000s

I always say 2000s. I’ve never heard anyone call it anything different. I wonder where the aughts/naughts thing came from

I have never heard of any other way to pronounce the 2000’s, I always assumed you could only pronounce it one way.

Anyway yes, I’m just like the rest that say “Two-thousands”.

two-thousands. I had no idea aughts was a thing but it sounds cool! I've also seen people use 'y2k' in regards to fashion, but I suppose that also encompasses the late nineties.
