How do you make money?

Turnips.

I find it's the most effective way of generating millions. I have bought enough to fill up my mayor's Lockers A & B. (Locker C has reserved items which cannot be re-purchased.)

Let's say you for filled your storage of Lockers A & B with a week's turnips.

We'll say the cost of purchasing the turnips was 100 bells each.

If you buy them in 10s, it would amount to 12000.

The cost: 12000 x 100 = 1,200,000 cost.

Let's suppose you stay in your town and Reese will buy at Re-Tail for 400 bells each.

12000 x 400 = 4,800,000 sold.

4,800,000 minus 1,200,000 = 3,600,000 profit.

If you go to someone else's town to sell the turnips, because the person's Re-Tail Shop has a better price, let's suppose the turnips are selling for 600 bells each.

12000 x 600 = 7,200,000 sold.

7,200,000 minus 1,200,000 = 6,000,000 profit.

I find this more rewarding than everything else.

I started off selling bug farming on the island. Then turnips, but the waiting list to sell got really long. By that time I had saved around 30m? But since I was so impatient, I started to sell hybrids and do villager trades. I recently got the ABD so woo :D

Big beetles & sharks from the island. With at least 4 goldens it totals to about 400k per trip. Should prob start selling flowers soon though, cause I kind of have a town explosion of them...
