How do you give items to different people in different towns?

I remember in good old ACG you could give items to Nook and he would give you a code that somebody else could input and get that item. Anyway to do it in this game?

You can go to someone's town(or they can come to yours) and drop it on the ground and they can pick it up. You can also mail it to someone in a letter, but you have to be in that person's town to send it to them. You can also purchase wrapping paper from Nooklings' to wrap the item and make it a surprise!
