I always found it the most insulting thing for a villager to give to you.

I really don't like it when they give me a piece of fruit I SENT them as a gift :/

The worst thing is when you give them a favorite item as a birthday gift.

And then the next day, you get said gift back in exchange for a favor.

Early on in the game I was happy to get odd gifts from the villagers. It was usually something I was missing from my catalog.
Right now I'm happy because my other town is working on their catalog badge. One less items to buy.
