I believe it to be accurate. I'm not going to fight or oppose it, because that's just the way we trade villagers. And if we don't base villagers on looks, what do we base it on? What they say? Because I'm sure for every class of villager there is, there's a set phrase. None of them are truly unique, from how I see it.

I'm not a fan of it, it seems to encourage most of the things about ACNL that I don't like. Lots of the dream towns I have visited are just full of Tier 1 and high Tier 2 villagers because people want them as a sign of status or something. It isn't helped when these kind of people are then responsible for bullying other players who don't care about rankings and just get villagers they like or don't go out of their way to get specific villagers. Despite the fact that there is no such thing as villagers who are "better" than others the ranking system is then used as justification for these kind of people because apparently if a villager isn't popular they must be "ugly".
I'm also personally not a fan of paying for villagers. I like the idea of relocating a villager from one person's town to another but as soon as a monetary value is added it just seems wrong to me. I don't expect many people to agree with me on this point though.

That said I do understand that the Popularity List has a specific purpose and it does provide some order to the Villager Trading Plaza and kudos to Chrystina for keeping it up to date. I imagine it can't be a very easy task. Its just a shame people twist its purpose and ruin it.

Eh, I consult it every time I see someone has commented on it in hopes that it's been updated. I really only want to see where my ultimate dreamie Chief sits once the list has been updated. He deserves a Tier 1 spot!!! He's my favorite :). I do like to see what everyone is requesting most though, it's fun!

I choose my dreamies based on the villager's personality type and how cute their design is. ...so sometimes my dreamies are at the upper crust of tier 1 because everyone else likes them too!

I really don't care about lists. I like lazy, smug, normal, ucchi, and snooty. If they look cool, I like them. I like Drago, because he's an awesome dragon, but I really couldn't care less about a unicorn lol

I think you see them in a lot of towns because they're very well liked, which then means they go up high on the tier list. The more people are looking for them or buying them, the further up the list they will go. And example would be Melba. She was pretty low tier for quite a while, then suddenly people started to notice her and she shot up to tier one for a while. It's settled down and now she is tier 3.
I have mostly high tiers in my main town, actually I think they're all tier 1and 2. But I got them because I love them, they're popular for a reason after all.
I also see no problem with charging for villagers, especially those running cycle towns. Cycling take time and the majority of cyclers now charge very little. I ask for a very small amount of tbt for my villagers. It's no different than somebody who is running a shop, they are taking time out of their day and selling items. I wouldn't expect them to give all their items away for free.

Overall I think it's a very useful list. Cycling would be difficult without it and offices people's general idea of what they can expect to pay for a villager

As a cycler I am mixed. I try to cycle the more unpopular and unique villagers and pricing them against the list has caused me some stress because I want to be fair but also give them a spot light.
I don't base my pricing exclusively on the list but I do for the top two tiers. It has led me to change my price ranges three times in order to reflect being fair vs what the list says is popular.
I also don't like popularity listing or contests because what one thinks is a great, good looking, popular choice and or opinion many others may not.
If that makes sense.

I feel like I just rambled on lolol!

It is okay as a guide, since I never know what to sell stuff for and it gives suggestions based on popularity. However, I look for villagers I think are cool, not necessarily ones that are popular. It doesn't change my opinion of who I want in my town.

I don't really understand why so many people hate the list or don't agree with it. Considering every single villager is exactly the same, I'd rather go after looks than anything else. And I'd much rather have Julian as a smug instead of Rodney or Quillson.

So yeah, the list is necessary and I find it to be pretty accurate too.

I'd have to agree that it does drive up villager prices to extreme levels though....like I get that it's supply and demand, and if there's a really high demand then the price will go up accordingly, but it just feels icky to me....

It doesn't necessarily have to drive up prices though. There isn't a recommended price guide anymore, so it's pretty much just looking at what a villager has sold for before. I sell my tier 1's for 60tbt now as the prices have just fell the last couple of months. It's rare to sell them for 100+ anymore. Unless of course it's an auction which is fair game. If a villager is really wanted them people will keep outbidding each other, regardless of a villagers tier I think.

I understand that everybody has favourite villagers and especially for ones with interesting designs there will be a larger group of people who like them. But I become very sceptical when 90% of dream towns I visit have identical villagers and all of these villagers happen to reside in the top two tiers. It also isn't helped when I see people talking about replacing villagers they like for ones that are simply more popular or worse people questioning whether it is ok to like a specific villager because someone else told them they were bad because of their ranking. Although I realise that this isn't its purpose the tier ranking system enables this and that's why I don't particularly like it.

Also as I stated before I don't expect my opinion on charging money for villagers to be a popular one but I'll try to make my reasoning behind it a little clearer. Animal Crossing presents us with these collections of pixels and information and tells us to call them villagers. Tells us to talk to them, help them, and become friends with them. So to then treat them simply as objects or to use your own metaphor "items in a shop" seems contrary to how I personally see animal crossing. I have nothing against people who do charge, in fact I understand why they do, having a cycling town takes a lot of time so its understandable you'll need something to make it worthwhile but it's just something that I can't bring myself to take part in.

Eh I don't understand Julian, Fang, Stitches, Flurry or Erik. I just dont see them as very nice looking.
idk why carmen, flora and dotty are in tier 3

woah punchy is in tier 3?? i gues that craze is over then

The popularity list I don't mind. It can be helpful sometimes. And I enjoy watching the trends.

It's the lack of Tier 3 4 5 villagers available for giveaway/sale/trade at any given time. If you really love them but Cycle towns are in a hurry no matter it seems them "valuable" enough that they auto-void.

Or put them up for a giveaway for 10 minutes!

And The VPList has made some people shift perception that Tier 5s are "worthless". There are some great villagers there! They have value!

I got verrrrry lucky once with a Tier 5 trade like that. And then they held them for ransom until I gave money for the "hassle". Lol :)

But honestly I see the other side too - such unique niche demand! And I had a cycle town last summer. I'd like to be able to help people find their dreamies especially if they are Tier 3 4 5. Logistically it is a challenge.

Villager Popularity List is still necessary right now. And that might change with Amiibo.

Mixed feelings for me. I get the idea, but it's too lopsided. After Tier 1, IMO, Tiers 2-5 should be more even.

Yeah, I understand this one. I'm guilty of it too with my cycle town. It's all supply and demand and I have held on to tier 5's before who were lurked for and the person didn't claim them and nobody else wanted them so they still ended up voided and a few hours of cycling wasted. Which is why I no longer offer lurks for tier 5's since I started cycling again.
I also know the struggle of trying to find a tier 5 when I wanted Annalise...so I can see it from both sides

I think it is unfortunate because it affects people's perception of villagers, when a lot of them are cute or unique (not just the ones in the higher tiers). Instead of learning to appreciate the ones we have, we end up desiring "better" villagers. Human nature, I guess.

I'm just happy that I was ignorant of TBT in the beginning of my ACNL experience, so I had time to develop subjective feelings about certain villagers.

The one thing I don't like about it is it's considered to be the royal standered for other sites. Not just the forums here. I don't think this is fair because there are still quite a few sites that are quite different then here. However, it is referred to so readily as if it is the end all be all list.

The one thing I do like, Zucker isn't AS popular as he once was. He is literally the only one I detest and could never understand at all why he was ever on the top 10 tier one.
But that's just me lol.

It's a good guide as to which villagers are popular at a certain point in time, but obviously it's not 100% accurate. Some villagers will always be more generally popular than others due to looks but some people will pay loads for a seemingly worthless villager due to personal taste or sentimental attachment. Pretty cool that we all have different favourites though.
