How do you feel about 'Insta-lands'?

Yes, this. Rodney is actually precious to me and doesn't deserve to be the poster boy for "bad" villagers. No one does, really.

Aw I'm sorry! I don't actually hate Rodney. But he did move into my New Leaf town and would never leave. Then, just when I start accepting he's there, and start trying to get to know him better, he decided to move away.

Rodney is capricious! He is wind, he is shadow.

Nah, I don't think your post sounded mean-spirited toward my roly poly bucktoothed baby. I've just noticed an uptick in overtly ****ty comments about him lately and that makes me sad.

Sometimes I like looking at islands to get inspiration. (And even then, I try my best to put my own spin on it.) But I'm really not bothered by them or try to hold them to a special standard.

I think that islands with only the most popular villagers are a bit boring to see, IMO. But if that's what people want and love, that's great! Do what makes you happy and don't worry about what I think. Actually, I've noticed a trend of people shaming people for having popular villagers and I think that's ridiculous. All villagers are valid!

I love them. People work so hard and have immense creativity. They share it because they’re proud! Plus it gives the ability to give inspiration to others. I think people take it the wrong way though and see as they are not good enough which definitely should not be the case. Everyone works on their own pace with their own style.

Count your blessings. You could have Truffles or Charlise.

As long of the owner of the island is having fun playing the game irdc. If they are bored but doing it just to show off it’s a little extra.

I love looking at them, but i feel like they can influence the look of my island more than i like, and so i am trying to avoid them a little currently.

They look nice and are often inspiring, but I definitely wouldn't want to play the game on those islands. To me they kinda seem too perfect if that makes sense? Like you wouldn't want to "touch" it, and aesthetic players often just play on a single date so that their island always looks best. I appreciate their efforts and commitment, but for my playstyle I just need more room to breathe and change things up.

And, yeah, you don't want your island to look like everyone else's, but there really aren't enough pretty items in the game for that so far...

Uh...did you read my op? I wasn't hating on them. I'm actually interested in getting inspiration from them. I was just asking what everyone thought of them, not putting them down...

Sorry, it's not really directed towards you, but also other replies/opinions I've seen with people talking about "picture perfect islands." There always seems to be a sort of gatekeeping or "not like other girls" undertone, like somehow people with the not so developed island/unpopular villagers are the ones playing the game the right way and that somehow sharing these super-developed islands is all a cry for attention or something. (to me, "Insta-Islands" has that kind of negative connotation, although I see now you didn't mean it quite that way) Playing the game just to create a beautiful island full of popular villagers is also a valid way to play.

Back in New Leaf with Dream Suite, people would create towns solely for how they looked (not to play in) and they got very popular as art pieces in and of themselves, but this go round I've seen a lot more negative attention towards people doing the same thing. Maybe because people have to share their creations via social media vs in game, it's gotten all caught up in that mess, but I feel like people are really letting comparison be the thief of joy.

To be honest, I feel quite pressured to have a beautiful town like @sierra because her town is glorious and I'm going to work on such a waterfall pathway in the future. She inspires me with her island. <3

i like being creative with my islands - thinking of ideas and working them out myself, while also incorporating the things i see that i think are really cool. like, i wanna have a lil residential area type thing, but i've wanted to make it kind of like a culdesac because i think that would be really cool. like having all my shops in a specific area, and i want to have a shopping district type thing, but i kind of really liked the idea of having a bit of a beach town theme to most of the areas of my island, so i'm making a boardwalk. i really love the nature path type stuff, so using some elements of that aesthetic, i want to make a "moon pool" i guess out of my clifftop river source with a bunch of the celeste furniture.

of course, i'm definitely going to rip off some ideas, like the playgrounds, hop scotch with villager names, possibly some other elements - but that's my choice and i've wanted a playground pretty much since i got the game. i like having a nice looking island while also putting my own spin on some things.

on the topic of "popular villagers everyone has", i do have a lot of the more popular villagers (i.e. raymond, marshal, julian, dobie to an extent, etc.), but that's because i love them. i also have a few that aren't as well loved, and i love them to death too. honestly those "all star" line ups feel rather meh to me, but i get that a lot of people love villagers that i don't care for, so people can honestly do as they please. if that means getting a bunch of really popular villagers and making your town look like a lot of the other popular towns, so be it. you do you.

They’re very nice to look at. However, everytime I see them and want to uncorporate some ideas in my island, I always back out. I realized that there is not a single area in my current island that I want to destroy just for something else.

My island is super developed, 5 star, tons of hybrids, with I think a good 'cast'. At least in my opinion. BUT it's also nothing special, nothing really unique, I mean I have a lot of things that have been done over and over, like a playground, an outdoor spa, neighborhoods, etc. I love every part of it but at the same time I'm itching to take all of it down and make something really weird, though I'm not sure what that would be.

I just can't wait for the Dream Suite to come out so I can see all the crazy islands and the cool things other people have done with New Horizons.

I am actually amazed that they could design their islands AND manage to get their villagers in a short amount of time. It is possible that there are save editors and hacking involved but still, I admire the dedication.

i personally prefer natural and nature-riffic landscapes myself as they remind me of ... well, my home and the landscape around me. i want to reflect that in my island somehow. but i admire people who have the patience and willpower to construct modern islands like that ... it inspires me a lot knowing they stuck through with their vision of the island they wanted for themselves and their villagers.

I highly dislike any town that as only mainstream villagers. It shows the person has no real opinion and just likes to conform to what's popular.

While I do agree that there are people out there that seek out popular villagers for clout etc, I feel like the implication that liking villagers that other people like means one doesn’t have an opinion is a bit hurtful? The popularity of villagers seems to be determined by them being interesting looking or (subjectively) aesthetically appealing and sometimes people can’t help liking the same things as everyone else.

On the subject of super developed instagram/YT islands, I love watching the tours even though a lot of them aren’t my style at all!

they're fine, but i would never have an island like that. i don't really care too much about landscaping or whatnot. i have some bits and bobs that look nice around town, but it's not a main priority like that

Oh, I'd love to see if its ok! I've only just started terraforming after like 200 hours of playing, and I'm trying to take it slowly with my own island even though its hard, since I don't want a terraformming mess. But I always love seeing pics and vids of beautiful islands!

i like insta-islands! back in new leaf, i used to be really insecure about my town whenever i saw these "perfect" towns, and it would really bother me. but i'm a competitive person by nature, so i used that as motivation to improve my town. seeing those pictures makes me really active with my town, and i'm still using those "perfect" islands as inspiration for me to continue. also, people say that those islands are boring, but they're really not. yeah, it's the same cutesy theme with popular villagers, but there's always a personal touch that shows how creative people can be
