How do you feel about custom paths?

Man I really love some of the custom paths out there, they really look phenomenal!! I really wish I could use more of them but the sound they make when you walk on them is such a deal breaker. The sounds for the in game paths are just so good and the custom paths feel like you are walking on air. It’s heavily immersion breaking imo.

I really hope that they will let us choose a default sound for the custom path or even set a better one than the sound we currently have. Right now, I use custom paths very sparingly because the sounds are just such a deal breaker for me...

I use custom designs to add trim to the regular pathing. Most of the custom paths I've found just lack enough fine detail to look realistic. It's harder to make a 32x32 grid look natural like the ones we're provided. It's a shame that we can't change the sound either.

I have been contemplating the trim approach. I love the one in your picture. It is a great way to blend the provided paths with a custom touch to match your town.

i wish official paths were customizable. what i wouldn't do for a slightly different shade of grey for the stone pathing! but i never used much pathing in previous games even though i love how it looked in other towns, but find i'm using it more now that there's a built-in option.

Yep. I wish the custom paths had a nice sound and that they couldn’t be kicked up. But I could not handle the lack of diagonals in the real paths! I made my own brick path based on a pattern I found and added diagonals, and I’m super proud of it.

I don't use full on custom paths nor path overlays because I really hate the sound they make and I'd much rather have the in-game path sounds. However, I do use many custom designs such as clovers, small flowers, rocks, leaves and wooden planks because they add so much character <3

Legit love the mum cushions scattered into your flower garden.

I hope the ability to add sounds will come in an update!
At first, I was using the stone paths, even though they don’t match my town much. But then I found some amazing cream-colored bricks that can go over the official paths.

I love custom paths for the extra diversity they add to your pathing, but I don't use them.

I don't use them only because it's impractical for me because I keep accidentally pressing Y over them and removing my custom paths. So dropping items on the ground when I'm moving stuff leads to me unintentionally dusting away my custom paths when I go to pick stuff up and redecorate.

Why is it even a thing to remove them so easily with Y anyway? That's my only issue with custom paths tbh

I agree with what everyone is saying that the sound doesn't hit the same and it's annoying how you can kick away the design despite using the design tool. I also hate how the custom paths don't show up on the map despite using the design tool! I'm literally paving the ground. Show up on my map!! I have a custom brick path that looks so pretty on top of the grass because the cracks are transparent but if I want the paths to show up on my map I have to put it on top of another and it clashes with the stone and looks ugly on the dirt. Oof the struggle.

I used them a lot on New Leaf, but right now, I'd probably use a few as support paths. I'm sticking with the original paths as my main. I don't like the sound of custom when you walk and I prefer a more natural look this time.

As much as I love all the creativity, the custom paths just don't look as polished to me.
I get that they don't want to pixelate them, but the smoothing thing makes them lack depth and oversimplifies things.
I'm just going with the paths I can buy with Nook Miles and I'm hoping there will be a wider range added in the future.

The biggest thing that annoys me about custom paths is how they sound. As tedious as this would be, I wish I was allowed to change it to one of the other ones like the stone paths. The regular paths sound so good, but then I step on custom paths and it's like I'm walking on plastic. 😢

What we usually do is just lay the custom design over the official paths in order to get it to have natural borders and sometimes to keep the textures, although you do need to put something transparent on the design that can be done with just one pixel that will probably not be noticeable if you incorporate it into the design.

Like currently we have space paths which are layered over stone

The transparent pixel looks like one of the stars.

I didn't even think of that, but I totally see what you mean. I do wonder... Is this the same when you apply custom pathing using the island designer app? I haven't experimented with the Custom Design slot in that app, so maybe that works? I'll have to try later when I get time.

Edit: Welp, just read through some of the comments here... Turns out it doesn't matter how you place the custom designs, they always get kicked away regardless :/ Dang.

Unless they changed it in a patch over the last week or so, then yeah it still happens when you use the designer app too. It's a pain.

I was excited to use custom paths in my town after seeing all of the beautiful opportunities from New Leaf. However, once I discovered that not only is there no sound effects on custom paths, but the also do not show up on your map, I just switched back to using the in-game ones.

Absolutely love what people have been doing with them. Visually, I would really like to use some. Due to the lack of sound I'd want to hear, I'm not going to use them for the time being.
