Now that we can update the look of our villager houses after the DLC update, have you been updating? And how?

I like to have the villagers keep their exteriors, but makeover their interiors. When I decorate their interiors and exterior, I like to match their interior with their appearance, so I’ve been using the same colors they have physically on the inside of their houses.

The only villager who has received a new exterior was Rodeo. He wasn’t fitting in aesthetically with the rest of the island, and the house also didn’t match his coloring well. The rest I’ve kept their default exteriors.

Do you all have a different way of decorating? Have you decided not to decorate them at all? Feel free to post examples!

Not all my islanders have had makeovers for their homes. I'm taking my time. When I do redecorate a home, I consider the animal's personality and, based on my past conversations with them, give them stuff I think they'll like. For instance, Claude gets the artisanal bug cage for his bug friends and Gonzo gets boomerangs on his walls because he's from the land Down Under. (And... Men at Work is playing in my head now. 😁 )

That's Fuchsia's home. She used to be in a band, so I gave her the electric guitar and amp. She had told me many stories about her rebellious youth and I decorated to reflect her bold, devil-may-care attitude.

With Joey, I wanted a bright and breezy look in his home to match his happy and easy-going personality. I kept the plastic pool (changed the colour to match the new decor) from his old room. I remembered that Joey likes balloons so I gave him his own balloon friend.

The last homes I'd redecorated on Littlestar were Raymond's and Marshal's. I rarely change the exteriors except for new colours. I do like gyroids so I tend to leave a gyroid or two in the islander's home. Certainly not as many as I'd leave in Ribbot's home if Ribbot actually lived on my island. 😅

I haven’t decorated all of my villagers’ homes so far, but I’ll probably try to decorate all of them eventually. For each villager so far, I looked up their favourite colour, clothing style and hobby in New Horizons, then sort of used that as a starting point. I think so far, it’s just Agnes’ house that I wasn’t satisfied with (and eventually I’ll re-do it).

Pinky
Her interior is my favourite so far.

Rhonda
Her favourite colour is purple, and favourite styles are gorgeous and elegant. Rhonda apparently has the music hobby, but she is the villager I always see reading and talking about books, so I gave her a tiny library and plenty of books in her house.

Norma
Norma’s favourite colours are white and aqua, and she likes the cute and simple styles. Her base dress is also the plaid-print dress, so I went with pinks, blues and greens.

Louie
I didn’t think about it too much with Louie. He really likes his fish, so I kept that, and my main concern was him finally using a real bed after two years of having a sleeping bag.

The only time I've really felt compelled to re-decorate a villager's home is if their house is completely barren. For example, Roald was one of my starting villagers, and I thought that like the other villagers, he would do some DIY's and accumulate furniture overtime. But after months upon months, his house was still just plain walls with only a chair in the center and a crafting table in the corner. I just really did not like that, so I gave his house a makeover, trying to keep his personality and sense of aesthetics in mind as I did so. I might post screenshots later when I have access to my Switch. Unless I forget.

I gave all my villagers new exteriors so they'd fit into their neighborhoods better. The four by the beach (Lolly, Flora, Purrl, and Lionel) have light colored board exteriors. Kind of beach shack feel. The forest group (Sally, Gruff, Dobie, Cherry, Filbert, and Snake) are either log or stone, in darker, neutral colors.

For the interiors, I tried to stay with their personalities, and tried to keep something from the original layout.

Lolly got a cozy soft pink and brown that centers around the kitchen and dining table. Sally has something similar, but with more yellows and a slightly more "foresty" feel.

Flora has white and pink, cheerful and open, so she can dance. She was the only one I hadn't moved out of the starter house, so I was able to do more. I gave her cute items to put around and kept it light.

Purrl swapped her antique furniture for elegant, and I went with blues and cream. It suits her elegant, refined outlook, but it's still warm and homey.

Lionel has a similar feel, but his home is darker wood and more masculine. I gave him a base of green.

Gruff loved his music theme, so I kept his jukebox and some of the diner furniture, though I lightened the room up. I also gave him a simple bed and not a lot of clutter.

Dobie has a writer's room, but with windows. He also got greens, but more moss colored, and simple lines.

Snake isn't interested in decorating, so he has minimal furniture. Bed, couch, table, and a pull-up bar in the corner. It's uncluttered and open, so he has plenty of room to work out.

Filbert kept a lot of his original furniture, but he now has a space theme in the floors and walls. I also added toys and made it a room a little boy would love.

Cherry got a sophisticated look with black and red, using the sleek furniture. I kept her open frame kitchen and built the room around that. It's upscale, but also a little more edgy, just like my girl.

Oh wow it seems a common theme I’m seeing is matching the house interiors with their personalities and likes. It’s nice to see the different options everyone has chosen. I tried this a couple of times, but ultimately ended up with going with decorations that match the island as a whole instead. I still kept their houses matching their coloring, but the the houses were decorated mostly to look cluttered with dark lighting.

Your houses all look so beautiful!

Its hard to explain how I design the villager homes but if you look at my dream address on both of my islands then you'll see what I have done with them here they are. Also keep in mind the game is RNG weather which villager homes it allows you to enter in the dream so I have no control over that:

(Main Island) Destiny: DA-0241-2851-2864
(2nd Island) Quadratum: DA-8921-2234-1678

I have changed some villager exteriors but I prefer to keep their interiors default. When the update released I did clean up their houses though. I removed stuff like gifted fish, displayed clothing, etc..

I try to blend some of what they already have with an updated, overall, new appearance. (Sometimes I customize established pieces. For example: I did this with rattan furniture which belongs to the underrated Uchi horse Reneigh.)

I pretend they have a human’s perception, and feelings, and try to not make a change that is dramatically and drastically opposed to the theme of their intended house. (For example: I would not change a space-friendly house for a given villager—say, for one, the terrific Smug octopus Cephalabot— to look like something that is suitable for Bunny Day.)

It makes the new design interesting and respectful to each villager.

(I should get around to including pics.)

Lots of my villagers have an "occupation" and so I decorate their house for that. I made Zucker's house a diner, gave Coco the gyroid house she deserves, and made Ribbot a fisher

My villagers all tell a story, so unless someone ever reads the profiles I have for them on here, it's harder for people to work out. They're all themed and people might be able to work out each one, but the houses they have are mostly based off their general actions and interactions with others around the island rather than their appearance/general personality type.

bluebellie This thread and the beautiful pictures players have posted re their villager home decorations has me hankering to buy happy home paradise again but I promised myself I would only buy it when I have completed/experienced a full year cycle in the game without time travelling and that's around August for my first game and September for my second one as I want to take my time and experience the seasons/cycles fully. I ended up taking some time to move all my villagers recently so there was enough room for personalized outdoor areas which I really enjoyed doing despite not being great at creating so I am looking forward to being able to re decorate their interiors as well (although the thought of 30 home designs before it unlocks enabling us to re-design our own villager houses sounds daunting to me at any rate-) I have enjoyed reading from Licorice that when I get around to being able to re-design interiors I can finally remove the fish and bugs from their houses as I wasn't sure that would be possible until now-)

Im sure you’ll enjoy it! The expansion has so many enhancements to the game! Though the 30 homes was a bit hard, there’s ways to get past that very easily. I sort of rushed through it, but it can be nice as well to take your time. I really love all the new features that I’m able to use on my main island because of it. There’s pillars, accent walls, sounds, furniture shining. So many things you’ll enjoy!

Hi Bluebellie,

I am dying to get it and get started but I am afraid if i do I might end up ignoring my 2 islands too much if I go off and obsess-) when i need to try and get every event and catch the last few bugs and fish this year which will hopefully then give me more time to spend towards the end of the year on this DLC. I confess after looking over the pics on here I jumped onto Nintendo's website to look at it lol I watched quite a long you tube video the other night on this and love it all but if there was one thing I could wish for in animal crossing it would be some sort of group meet up with our animal villagers to drink coffee chat and snack and such like rather than just having photo-shoots at harv's and one amiibo card visit from the roost which I also enjoy but again wish there was a little more in depth communication to it especially as villagers are one of my favorite aspects of the game. So to me while the cafe's and restaurants look awesome I wish there could be a little more animal integration in some areas we could take part in more.

I tend to leave exteriors alone. The only house I've done so far is Merry because that ugly orange interior doesn't work for her. I added a lot more pink and white to match the outside.

I haven't played in months, but being able to restyle villager homes is one of the best things ever. I restyle the whole house, inside and out, though I do try to fit it to the villager. I don't really have an overall island theme. My favorite I've done so far is Fauna's house.

angelcat621,

I think I might be tempted to change the exterior of villager homes if I am going for a theme but that's all, then I would change the interior to suit the villager likes/dislikes however my only option at the moment is the experiment with villager outdoor gardens until I get happy home paradise but I am already pleased that my current villagers appear to enjoy what I have already created for them so that made me happy for future projects-)

Fauna is on my 1st island and i adore her and they way you have decorated her house interior is awesome and so totally her with her lovely nature so I already saved a pic of how you have redesigned her home and will use this for some future ideas when i finally get the ability to be able to change my villager homes:) I hope you don't mind...

Don't mind at all! I'm flattered. 😊 Please go ahead!

Thank you I really think you did an awesome job with fauna's interior but I have to ask if her interior is bigger as I keep looking at your picture and thinking about Fauna's house in my island which does not appear to be as big inside as your pic is showing so I am wondering if this is a happy home paradise feature you have been able to use?

Fauna's house looks stunning! You did such a nice job. Definitely the kind of home Fauna deserves! 😍
