Just wondering - I've been lurking the Villager Trading boards lately and I've seen some players trading villagers that are 100% original, which I can't seem to keep my villagers at unless I completely ignore them and fill my Re-Tail with overpriced stuff. But if I ignore them, they don't seem to move (I've been trying this with Tex - must have ignored him completely for months now, he's just not budging at all). Usually, despite my best efforts they'll at least change their shirts or wear one of my patterns, so I'm just curious as to how people keep villagers and their homes completely original. :p

some of them might be from cycle towns but as for normal people idk maybe they don't give them any furniture.

I frequently talk to villagers who I plan to sell (and thus want to keep original), but I avoid doing any requests for them at all. No fruit, no checking to see if a lost item is theirs, turn down anyone who wants to give them a gift box, etc. They still tend to change stuff on their own, but it happens much less often. I've had Marshal in my town for weeks and he's only lost one piece of furniture.

For villagers that I intend to keep, when their houses get messed up I sometimes send them their original furniture and they might put it back in the same spot. It's trial and error (they like to put stuff in the wrong spots), but I reverted Flurry's house back to original once.

I fill up the flea-market with overpriced fruit, replace all of the designs in the Able Sisters' shop with plain black hats and never send them gifts. Same with my cycling towns.

what a great idea! i hope you don't mind if i use it for my cycling town :3

Yeah I have all perfect peaches for 999,999 bells in my re-tail - for able sisters you don't have to put black hats, you can just put dresses or whatever! They can be pretty haha just non-wearable by villagers!

villagers never display gems, so i keep re-tail full of them at their max sellable value (7,999 for gems, 9,999 for silver & gold) and let them buy them and then immediately replace them. keeps them from selling their furniture at least, though some of them still keep giving it away to me 9_9

That's exactly what I do for my cycling town, and for my main town. Except the part where you never send them gifts in my main town.

Well, if I want to keep a villager original, I keep my retail ready for trades with pricy items, so no villager buys them. I put hats up for display instead of shirts, and I don't deliver things that have anything that can be displayed. Most of all, I pray that they don't copy catchphrases.
