Let's say you have a town...that sucks.
How did you make it into that one dream town everyone talks about?
Did you cut down every tree? Did you first get villagers to move in then make things happen?
I'm so confused when people say they're going to redo their towns because I always think they'll just add another tree. What do you do?

Mmm...I started out working piece by piece. I started breeding flowers I liked and using them to line pathways, then designated areas I knew I wanted villager houses, moved the villagers I didn't want through TTing and plot resetting the ones I did want in, slowly started cutting down trees and planting new ones (a golden shovel really helps) and replacing flowers with bushes (I use holly/hydrangea) then started putting in the PWPs I wanted.
My towns still in progress but my pathways kinda look likes this

I chopped every tree down, dug up every bush, removed almost every pwp, and moved all flowers to the beach. After all that, I worked on connecting buildings with paths and then slowly placed projects where I thought would look nice. Then I planted all bushes and trees along the paths and if I had 12 bushes and trees in a row, I would split the path into another path that leads to a different part of a path. I still don't think my town is done, but I'm getting tired of always fixing things. I pretty much just go on to look for clovers and make sure no one is moving. I visited your town and the one thing I didn't like is that your path is too wide.

Oh, I don't like plot resetting. :(
Why does a golden shovel really help?
And what did you do to the path for the diagonal bridges?

How wide are paths supposed to be?

Well, I've only done it once and I wasn't happy about it.

I firstly removed my paths, cut down all the trees and removed the stumps. Then I looked all over my town and see how huge my town is. I regretted everything that I done to my pretty town, I decided to save without quitting to turn everything back to normal.
I decided to update my final dream and go with resetting my town. My new town is much better than the old. :)

I think the golden shovel helps because you can make your own trees (The regular one) for 100 bells, that's what you have to bury. You can do more than 100 but 100 is most preferred.

You reset?! I'm so far into my game, I don't think I could do that.
Also, what do you mean "Make your own trees"?

There's no rule about how wide to make your paths. I just prefer two spaces wide, and sometimes single space.

That is an awesome town map!

Edit: My town is still a wip, but I've been doing little by little. You can see all pictures of it here: http://redribbonpresents.tumblr.com/tagged/La-Lune

I mean "Make your own trees" without just planting one when you get it at the gardening store. You may plant as many as you want, but not Cedar Trees, you have to get those at the gardening store.

Laid down paths. Planned everything out.
Worst case scenario, remove all PWP's and paths and trees and replot my whole town.

I don't lol, I buy new cartridges... I'm up to three now because I can never decide what I want to do with my towns. I had my primary one that sort of ended up being suburban/semi urban themed and I definitely reset tricked to get villagers where I wanted, I'm too picky for that random stuff. I planned my paths early and just updated them as I updated my theme and worked around them with flowers and forests and pwps. My second town was going to be my "fun" town that I wasn't so serious about... well it turned out I decided I wanted a real theme town so I reset it to make a Narnia town. So I bought a third cartridge to have a fun/cycle town... and now I feel like I want to make that one into a different themed town... so yeah, thats how it happens for me, I just end up getting a new game and planning it all out from the start. The idea of revamping a town I've already gotten used to... I can't wrap my head around it.

I started with a general pathway that led to all my villager houses at that time. I then have pretty much built up everything (stores, PWPs, trees, bushes, etc) around that original path.

A few tweaks have been made as some of my original villagers lived in goofy locations.

When I started my path I said to myself it would probably take a year to get to a place in which I was happy with my town. It actually only took about 6-8 months (I love, love my town) but there's still plenty of work to be done.

My second town has PWPs and bushes, trees, flowers, etc but no pathways. I like the contrast between the two.

I'd like to check out your Dream Address; but, so far, I haven't found whether you listed one.

Well, a long time ago, so long that I had forgotten this till I read your post, I cut down every last tree in my town and then replanted them all in places I liked better. I also crush, pulverize, or sell any flowers I don't think fit with the theme of my town... Which is basically anything that isn't a hybrid... The white ones can stay though cause they tone down the colours a bit. I dunno you just have to do what feels right and don't follow everyone elses examples! Make up your own perfect town! I hated my town for a while but now everyone that visits tells me its great and I love it again too!

You don't have to plot reset, I'm just anal.
I'm working on natural paths, I have a few "stones" placed down, but for the most part I run to wear down grass and have clovers scattered around from TTing. (not all of them are lucky)
With a golden shovel you can bury 1k bell bags and it'll plant a normal sapling in it's place with a chance of growing more bells. It's only happened once for me, but I don't mind.

Ehh...that's because it's not completed yet. v - v I have one, but it's not updated at all.

I divided my town up into pieces mentally. This was mostly for convenience's sake, so I could work on parts of my town and slowly get it to look the way I wanted. I also took note of which permanent PWPs I had put down so I could plan around those.

From there on, it's simply making plans of what you'd find pleasant, putting them into action and possibly tweaking. It takes a lot of patience and Bells to do it. I've had to move my flower clock twice and my windmill at least four times so far, and I'm still not done.

Here are a couple more shots from around town.
