How did you decide on decorating your town? Paths, PWPs, etc.

I'm early-ish in the development of my town.
I have the layout for my paths but IDK what I want to do with them! I like towns that are very cohesive in theme but I have a lot of different things I like. ex: fairytale/pink pastel theme, woodsy natural, tropical town
I see so many cute dream towns but I can't decide what I want to do with mine and I change paths all the time
it's hard for me to decide on it and find paths I like!

- What was the process of developing your town like?
- Does your town have a central theme or do you have a ton of variety?
- What was the process like for developing your town?
- Where'd you start, what did you do?
- Any advice for someone who is starting out with aesthetics?

Right now, I'm in the process of designing my town. :) It's main theme is The Little Mermaid, the Disney movie as it's my favorite. :) But others themes are; Fairy Tale, and like lots of plant life. (Plantiful? I guess. ;) )
First I started out by getting the best layout I could find. After I did that I planned what I wanted in my town and in what general area. I basically thought of what would fit well in my town and what PWPs there were to go with it. I got a list that ended up like this.
Woods-area for around Prince Charming's Castle.
Dark area where all my Ursula related villager will live (In this case, the bottom of the town. ;)
Happy, flower filled area with fountain to be like Ariel's home. (Pretty much a house that looks like Atlantis is self!)
And I just kept adding to the list.
Then I took a screenshot of my map with Mii verse and then I used Pixlr to add paint to draw where I think paths would go well. :)
I decided which bushes I would use, which trees would go where, and flowers. That was the easy part. The hard part would be putting it all together. ;)
Here's an out dated version. I'm going to restart this whole thing after school today.

Personally, I don't have a theme, but I want to keep things more or less coherent. I just pick things that I like and try to make sure that they match. I started out with a general idea of what I wanted my town to be like, but I kept changing it as I got more and more ideas. Maybe you can take those themes and put your own spin on it so that you're left with a single theme that brings them together, or you can have different areas in your town. You could have the pink theme near your town square or hall, tropical close to the beach or on the south half of your town, and the woodlands one in-between. That's just an example since I don't know your layout, but it's an idea.

A good way to start is to just start with paths. They take up enough space that they add personality to your town, but they're easier to change than PWPs (if the path you want to switch to takes up the same number of squares, just replace the patterns and your path changes automatically). That way, you can preview what your town will look like. Flowers, trees, and bushes are also easy to change so they're another good starting point.

You can place PWPs when you're done or just place PWPs you're sure about for now. The decorative ones can always wait until you know what you want your town to look like.

I didn't really have a plan. I just put PWPs where I felt like they would fit. I wanted a path that lead to every villagers' house though, so I started with patching first. My town has a lot of variety from not having a plan, but it still looks fantastic in my opinion.

I would start with chopping down all the trees, then construct your path. Place PWPs next. Accent the major PWPs (lighthouse, tower, flower clock, etc.) with bushes and trees. Landscape the rest of the empty space.

I have a general theme that I want to go with and I pick out the path (or a few paths) that I want to use or test out, once I find one I definitely like I make sure all of the trees are cut down in my town. It helps give a blank slate. Then I start by connecting main areas like the plaza, town hall, re-tail, the train station, etc and I work from there. I have dreamies, and I know where I want them to go so I plan accordingly and leave space for them that works with my paths. This is what I just did for my second town. My first town I kind of screwed up cause I didn't decide to do paths until later after I had got a few dreamies in unfortunate spots, but I worked around them. Don't stress too much about it. Feel free to visit my DA of my main town (if you've unlocked the Dream Suite) I'm very OCD about things, so everything is all neat and orderly. Good luck with your town!
