How did I let it get so... bad?!

I stopped playing ACNL a few months ago because loading up my main town was horrifying, anything I got my hands on when straight to the ground, DLC, rares, re-orderables, ore, money, full sets even flowers... E.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. And when I saw a good deal here on TBT I took it.

I tried to clean it up once by moving everything to the beach for sorting reasons, and well.. then that got filled up too.
The reason why I didn't just sell the stuff is because WHAT IF I might need it?! I know it's silly seeing as I am in absolutely no way hurting for bells and most items from the shop cost <4k but it was just the thought of having to order so much stuff. So I created new characters to help with storage... yeah.. they got full as well.

So NOW I am in the process of bringing sets, gracie items, holiday items and DLC over to my 'new' town and sorting them out, which isn't going to stay to try and organize and finish woodbury, there's just so much stuff. It's overwhelming and I played for nearly 5 hours yesterday and barely made a dent in the progress. Though I am finding TONS of things I can either give away or possibly sell for extra money and I am very protective of my town so organizing in a new town where if I have people over they cannot trample, steal, etc... is calming.

I am finding so many duplicates I didn't know I owned..

Has anyone else had a problem like this and got through it somehow? It's just so overwhelming to load up a town that is such a hodgepodge of random things.​

kinda. ive bought multiples of spring/sumner gracie items, planning to sell them on tbt later but i figured out that was dumb. so i sold them all. i also sold things that i didnt need like the gracie set and egg series because though they were unorderables, i didnt need or like them.

I can totally relate to those people on hoarders with this game, though in RL it's just crazy and absurd. I hate clutter IRL but on a game it's like, OKAY I'm over this *Shuts pff DS and enjoys clean house IRL*

I also use a spreadsheet to see what I have in my lockers, letter storage, and museum which helps GREATLY.

Not with items with me but bells! I had someone drop I turnipped a LOT and made 30 million bells and chose to drop em on the floor instead of going to the abd so I could run back to the train station immediatly to turnip more.

I realized a little too late this only served in covering my whole damn town in bags of bells all the way to the beach and it was such a mess!

I eventually managed to clean everything up but it was a process that took around a week LOL cus I kept buying stuff with my new money and dropping it on the ground too. I decided enough is enough and stopped buying and dropping and started full on cleaning.

It might take a few days but just keep at it! You'll get there so just focus on the task at hand, sell off everything you don't need and duplicates and organize everything. Don't let yourself be distracted by "what if I need it later" try to plan out ahead of time exactly what you need and get rid pf it all!

No I've never really had that problem in the game. I make sure to go through my stuff once or twice a week to not get to overwhelmed by stuff.

I am a hoarder as well.Although it does come in handy when you have three towns.Whenever i have an idea for a room, i usually have the items i need.I sell anything that can be ordered, but for a while my beach was a mess, and my lockers and museum were full.

This was kind of stupid of me, but for months I didn't realize that I had more storage space in my lockers so I ended up flooding my house, letter storage, museum spaces with a bunch of furniture and clothes. But then the problem got better once I discovered the extra three storage spaces and used my alt characters' storage. :')

You must sell the reorderables! Put them on the beach first and let multiple characters catalog them. If you need to order later you can order from multiple characters and not get the mail backed up so much Let different characters hold different categories of items, or use that spreadsheet idea! Good luck!

Omg I totally feel you. I keep EVERYTHING I get and like, I always forgot what furniture I've already got so I end up rebuying it. Seriously the worst is when you play the games with the campers. I'm always like 'I'm pretty sure I have 5 copies of the campfire cookware but what if I don't welp better buy another one'. My town atm is covered with furniture. Every square inch has a little green leaf on it. I need to sort my life out.

I am a hoarder both in real life and in New Leaf. I'm like 'well I've already got a copy of the spooky series so I better get another copy of the spooky series in case I misplace my old copy of the spooky series or maybe someone I know will want a copy of it hey better get another few campfire cookwares while I'm here'.

I am slowly sorting through all my junk too. I pick up all the stuff I can, then if it's stuff I want I drop it back down to be sorted again and if it's junk I sell it to re-tail/mail it to my villagers. The problem is this takes about 2 hours and by the end I've only sold about 15 items. I have a problem.

You and me are the same person. I actually just ended up finding 3 sets of sloppy.. How and why I ended up with 3 sets is absolutely beyond be. I do not NEED that many, nor do I want that many but aparently I did! I just feel the need to buy EVERYTHING. lol

I really need to try that. I have multiple towns and at least 2 are covered with items and bush starts. It's horrible! I really really really need to pare down and I'm working on that. I'm having at least one alternate character catalog and I'm also wondering if I can do the spreadsheet or if it will be too overwhelming.

But yeah, OP, I can relate! I'm not over it all yet, but I'm working on it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. My Main Town is an eyesore and a huge mess, and one of my other towns is a catch-all as well. But at least one is nice and tidy - for now. I hope I can keep it that way and let myself get rid of extra stuff that I don't need/like.

My harvest towns are like that. One beach has all the overflow of clothes in order. My real towns can drop by and get the clothing.
When my real/harvest town got too much stuff I started adding more houses and decorating them. It wasn't the plan for 2 of the house. They were suppose to house overflow fruit.

In my real towns I went thru the closets and kept only the clothing that I really liked. Also made sure to have a piece of each type of theme clothing for my lucky item of the day. Gracie items got cleaned up and are in the 2 museum rooms. I had doubles of a lot of them. Put some of the double favorites in my saved mail and the rest I sent to a town I open for visitors.
I do have doubles of the snow stuff,creepy,sloppy and easter. All of the sets are on display in different towns.

When I do the save mail I get fresh letters and write what is in the letter. It's quick to go thru. Slot A has all the unorderable items from Isabelle and other things.

When I sorted thru my towns I just worked on one thing. Started with shirts and put them in alphabetic order. Found there were a lot of repeats. To make it easier I went to my harvest town and used the event plaza. No villagers getting in the way.
Also you can wrap furniture that you want to save in gift wrap. You can fit 48 pieces in a museum or a basement. Just need to write down what is in each row.

Maybe a friend can come over and help you organize like things in the same pile.

goodness, i've found myself in this same situation the past two weeks or so... it all started out because i was cleaning my mayor's house, and i wanted something new with my rooms? (because up until that point, i had been mostly working just on my town's appearance rather than my characters houses) but as time passed all the items i've owned and received from trades had started to gradually build up, and now at least part of my town which isn't quite finished yet is covered in unused items? ;;

i'm really hoping to clean it up soon either way and find some way to work on my houses in a more organized manner, it's honestly such a stress and hassle to let things get out of hand only to become a big mess! /////
