how close can villagers be from the plaza?

I'm plot resetting Rudy right now, and after a while, it dawned on me that maybe the spot I chose is not possible. I realized I didn't really know how far away they have to be from the plaza... Does anyone know?

The closest I got was two spaces forward, though I haven't been plotting for long (two hours or so)

They can be pretty dang close, I believe. In my cycle town someone moved in one space from the train station stone entrance. I didn't think THAT was possible.

hmmmm, haven't had any luck. anyone else has experience with this?

My villager Rocco lives about 3 spaces from the plaza. I'm sure it is quite possible, but that's the best evidence I have.

That looks like it would work. Sometimes the villagers will get stubborn. Keep at it though
