I've never really been interested in hacking my game from an aesthetic perspective, however I'd be lying if I said having access to items not easily acquired isn't tempting (I know I can get almost anything from Belltree pretty easily, but I haven't had much luck with that lately due to schedule issues). My boyfriend, of course, insists I do not hack my 3DS lest I completely mess it up. I have more than one copy of AC:NL, but only one copy I'm currently working on and would be devastated if I lost somehow.

So I'm wondering, is there a safe way to test hacking without risking my main town and it's saves? Are there any major precautions that should be taken in-general or risks to be aware of at all? It's really tempting, but I am pretty worried about ruining things :/
I'm not even entirely sure how hacking works. I've found guides on how to Homebrew the 3DS, but - and maybe I'm just oblivious - I haven't seen how you actually go about doing things to the game after that.

Thanks in advance~

I'm not sure if there is any safe way to test it because I just used to hack using my old 3ds and playing on my new 3ds, mischacrossing on YouTube has good guides on how to hack your town.

We are not allowed to teach to hack its against the rules, this is a reminder as a just in case.

Advise: keep a back up of everything. If you do successfully hack your ds, keep a back up of your town each time you save. I suggest researching it to the best of your abilities i.e using Google.

Homebrew is temporary. Nintendo patches it quite fast.

In advance, I hope my response is within the forum guidelines; trying to keep this as non-specific as possible

I'll say that if you were to use the program I use, the risks of something going wrong just by adding items is next to null (this isn't what I hack for, but I do know the mechanics behind it).

Keep in mind that the main reason people "ruin" their game is because of extreme modifications that the game just was not meant to support - removing the train tracks, adding a fourth bridge, additional (or no) waterfalls etc.
Additionally, a safe way to do it is to simply have a backup; that way any game-ruining changes should be revertable

Thank you all for the replies! And thanks especially for the heads up about forum rules! I've seen people post about this before so I didn't even consider it might go against guidelines. And, I mostly just wanted to know about risks more-so than any how-to's, but still - i appreciate the warnings!

Well, it depends on which firmware you use. If you're on the latest firmware without CFW, then simple non-CFW hacks such as town editing are not possible (at least until LastHax gets released, but that requires Flipnote Studio 3D). If you are on 11.3 or earlier without CFW, you can use Soundhax and an ACNL save manager. Sadly I can't tell you how since it's against the forum rules.

You are quite behind on the hacking, my friend. There is RPwnG.

For the original poster....if you make sure you have a backup, you can fix ANYTHING that goes wrong. Even if you corrupt your town, you can fix it that way. Also, don't do something stupid, like making a waterfall in the middle of your town or something. I hack a lot and am yet to corrupt, the chances are very unlikely, so don't worry too much about that.

I have an excellent video that will teach you everything about hacking, but I don't think it's allowed to be linked publicly so I will pm it to you :) feel free to ask me any questions as well.
