For the forest Temple, do you need to be young link?

and how do you get epona?

For Epona go to lon lon ranch, pay to ride Epona, ask the guy to race, race two times and win both times to win Epona.

You learn it when you're younger, and you try and get her when you're older.

Yeah, you learn Epona's song by talking to Roman....er... Malon when your a kid then you get her when your an adult.
But you can't go back in time until you beat the forest temple and don't really even need Epona until the Spirit Temple.

Yeah, unless you plan on just riding Epona around or trying to catch Big Poes.
The Spirit Temple is the last medallion that you get (Gerudo Valley).

Get Epona, so you can get Biggeron's sword right away. Without her you cannot give the saw to the carpenter.

The biggoron sword is a necessity though.

It may not be a necessity, but is very easy to get and quite useful
