I am wondering if anyone can help me with my 5 star rating? I know it will be difficult as I do not have online membership at the moment, but I can send a video, pictures, I dont know. Ive been trying very hard for weeks and im stuck at 4 stars and im soo confused as to what im doing wrong. I have down custom design paths around but I read it doesn't count towards the rating anyways. I have 171 trees, a lot of flowers, items places outside trying to make it look nice, im just at a loss.

When you talk to Isabelle in Resident Services, can you tell us what she responds with? Along with your star rating, she usually provides feedback and advice.
4 star and she was telling me do decorate the entire island with more diy. Where the Christmas type trees are I ended up cutting down a few rows down and putting up a hedge fence around and left an open space and putting some of the items like the jungle gym, tea cup ride, and the bears there. The other trees below it, I took away ,aybe 5 trees and planted them closer so I can have an empty space there for more items and I have only laid down a train set and a fountain there. Have more room. The long 2 rows of flowers I took most up and scattered around the island in small clumps. Now still 4 star and telling me to plant more flowers. I gave up for the night. But until I did these changes she kept telling me to put out more items, diy or nook miles, I tried but no luck.

I was in a similar situation and based on the video, it looks like the DIY items (or more furniture in general, especially near some of the villager houses) might help. Good luck!

Island ratings in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are based on how well your island meets specific criteria. The game uses an internal point system, but it doesn't ever show you how many points you actually have in each category. However, Isabelle does give you hints about what specifically isn't meeting the criteria.
To get a 5-star island rating, you need to meet all of these conditions:
At least 8 villagers
Enough "island development" points (from buildings, bridges and inclines, fences, and furniture)
Enough "island scenery" points (from trees, flowers, and DIY furniture)
No negative feedback items (too much clutter, too many trees, or too much furniture in one area)
So! That being said, removing trees and furniture can affect your total points within the system, so instead of removing items, I'd recommend the following:
Avoid removing any items or trees from around your island right now.
Go to Isabelle and see what she specifically mentions. For example, if she says you need more DIY furniture, only add more DIY furniture without adding or removing anything else.
Go back to Isabelle and ask her for an island evaluation again. If she repeats the same suggestion, keep adding more items of that category. If her advice changes, switch to adding only that type of item.
If you follow her advice very specifically, you will end up with a 5-star rating!

Guys I did it! I ended up cutting some trees down, and in return I had to go farming for flowers to make up for the lost points, not the ones I wanted, but when I grow more hybrids I can replace them. I took some of the items that was clumped together in front of resident services and I moved them where the trees were taken down, kinda made a play area below my Christmas trees with them, and added a few more items under the other trees. Still have some area I can fill but I’m happy. I’ve never had a 5 star island before. Link to my 5 star island

I just saw this, but my first thought after seeing your run was there were a lot of trees on the top side so it may be affecting your rating. There's a thing as too many trees because Isabelle is a tree hater lol I'm kidding. But it looks like it was one of the reasons why. That's awesome that you got 5 stars
