So i've been trying to catch a char for a long time now trying the save and continue method and no luck =( my water fall goes of the left side of my village so its kinda difficult to see what's going on the other one come in on the right side and has quite a large base pool so i cant cast close enough to it to try and get one that way. any advise on what to do here? or has any one with side ways waterfalls had the same problem?
This is the exact reason that when I picked my town map I wanted the lower waterfall to face south. I had watched some JP Let's Plays that had an East or West lower waterfall and they had a hard time as well.
Try fishing from the top of the cliff into the lower waterfall.

Only around September - June 4am - 9am & 4pm - 9pm.
I still have the first village I made so i didn't really know what i was doing when i picked my layout =( i do stand at the top for it with know luck =( may have to try and borrow a friends waterfall =( this is the first time i've disliked my village ....
I caught mine at the top of the waterfall. Just toss the fishing line in about 2 spaces back and let the line float down the waterfall.
Turned the sound up or wore headphones and wait awhile before trying again. Sometimes the fish will just spawn while the line is down there.
List has the best times 4am to 9am and 4pm to 9pm.
I've also caught some just before the waterfall. Got a nice surprise because I thought they were only down in the falls.
Oh really ill try just waiting, is yours a South facing fall? On one of the wiki's next to location it says (not all town layouts in nl) so I'm worried I can't get them at all...
I had the same problem.I asked for help and got all kinds helpful tips, and I still couldnt find one.One day I visited a friends town and was walking along the river.I saw a fish and decided to catch it.I was really surprised that it was a char because it was no where near the waterfall.
Yes, I can confirm that I have also caught a char that was not near a waterfall, just somewhere along the river. It is possible to catch them there as well.
I don't know if more people have caught chars away from waterfalls, but I have at least.
I was surprised too. It was during the fishing tournament and just caught in the river. Think I caught 5 that day.

I just kept fishing until the game finally gave it up. Think the longer you fish the more chances you'll get it.
One crab drove me crazy but refused to quit. Just when I was thinking of quitting I caught it.
