Help breeding carnations

For a long time now I would bury a fertilizer in front of a carnation and the next day a new one appeared. Well yesterday I planted several bags and today there are no new ones. What changed?

Hmmm, what I do is put 4 flowers in a diamond and then bury the fertilizer in the middle of them.
