Help a newbie with paths (argh)

So I found this brick pattern I really like:



Which contains 13 squares. I didn't realize that replacing a slot with a different pattern would change your paths. Cue immense frustration after having laid out almost my entire path. I realize that people now accomplish laying these paths out by having more than one character, which I'm not really wanting to do.

So, my question, is there any way to work around this, or do you know of any brick patterns that are 10 squares or under? I love having paths, but right now it's full of holes and just looks kind of awful.
