I was wondering if it is possible to have two separate AC:NL towns if you have two game cartridges (no digital versions) and only 1 3DS?

And if you can, do you need to swap SD cards?

Also, if you are able to have two separate towns on two separate game cards, would I be able to play one of my towns on my friend's 3DS (not one that game was started on) in order to transfer villagers from my cycle town to my regular town?

I'm sorry if this is confusing, just need to know before I buy a second copy of the game. If you have two game cartridges and it works, let me know what I have to do!

Yes, you can use two game cards and have two towns on one 3DS. No need to swap the SD card, just the game cards.

And yes, you can put one into another 3DS and connect to your other town ^^

I believe that cartridges store game data on the cartridge. So you can have 2 different cartridges or a cartridge and digital copy without them interfering (I personally do the latter).

You can have a cartridge and a digital copy without the data interfering with each other.

I've been doing this for a while now.

Two things to watch out for:

1) If you time travel, you probably want to only change the in-game clock and never the DS clock. Popping a game in without remembering to reset the DS clock could be a real problem if your two towns are in different seasons!

2) If you are trying to get a streetpass badge, I've never gotten a consistent answer on which town will get the credit for streetpasses. You might need to be careful to load the right game before and after you are out on the town collecting the streetpasses.

Enjoy your new town!
